Creature Commandos: Season 1 – Cast, Characters & More

The upcoming release of Creature Commandos marks the initial venture into the reborn DC Universe.

James Gunn’s new DC Universe began with Creature Commandos, making it the first project to set the foundation for the upcoming Superman movie and all future projects in the universe.

The setup may seem unusual, and that’s because it is. The team is relatively obscure and the Creature Commandos branding has not been used for a new comic since a 2000 run.

The upcoming season of Creature Commandos seems to continue the quirky and heartwarming storytelling that Gunn is known for. With this in mind, there is definitely cause for excitement. Here is everything that has been revealed about Season 1 so far.

Release Date for Creature Commandos Season 1

The release date for Creature Commandos is set for December 2024, although a specific date has not yet been announced.

During the Annecy International Animation Festival, a recent Warner Bros panel confirmed the release date.

Who is in the cast?

Creature Commands features a cast that combines established DC characters with fresh faces, with a standout performance from Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. Grillo plays the father of the late Rick Flag from The Suicide Squad. Additionally, Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller, while Steve Agee and Sean Gunn return as John Economos and Weasel, respectively.

  • Frank Grillo will be playing the role of Rick Flag Sr.

  • Indira Varma as The Bride of Frankenstein

The Creature Commandos cast is also expected to reprise their roles for live-action appearances.

Grillo will also be featured in Season 2 of Peacemaker alongside the Creature Commandos. While the specifics of his appearance have not been disclosed, it can be assumed that tensions will escalate between him and Peacemaker, given the latter’s involvement in the death of Flag Sr.’s son in The Suicide Squad.

The remaining members of the cast consist of a group of eccentric DC Comics characters, parodying the Creature Commandos team from the original and contemporary DC Comics storylines. The same actors are anticipated to be reprising their roles for upcoming live-action appearances.

David Harbour, who is set to reprise his role as Red Guardian in future MCU projects, lends his voice to Eric Frankenstein, a character who serves as both a soldier and a hunter of monsters. Frankenstein, a well-known figure in the contemporary DC universe, frequently crosses paths with other superheroes in their battles against supernatural beings.

Indira Varma’s Bride of Frankenstein, the counterpart to Eric, is a relatively new character who used to be married to Frankenstein. However, their relationship became strained after Eric was compelled to kill their son and they have been separated ever since.

Tudyk’s portrayal of Doctor Phosphorous is that of a well-known antagonist in the Batman universe. His body is permanently affected by radioactive sand, causing his skin to burn and his skeleton to glow. While he is not usually associated with the Creature Commandos, he does become a member in the Flashpoint timeline.

Circe is perhaps the most intriguing of the group, as she alludes to the vast possibilities within the DC Universe. She is commonly portrayed as a nemesis of Wonder Woman and an immortal sorceress. Interestingly, she also frequently appears as an adversary of Supergirl, which holds significance with the character’s upcoming film.

Completing the team are Nina Mazursky, the merwoman responsible for creating the Creature Commandos in the New 52 timeline, and G.I. Robot, a series of androids dating back to World War I designed to enhance the capabilities of soldiers on the frontlines.

Creature Commandos Season 1

Although there are currently no specific details about Season 1 of Creature Commandos, the team generally consists of monsters who are either recruited or created specifically to battle other monsters.

The Annecy Animation Festival provided a sneak peek of the first season, showcasing storyboards of Flag Sr. and Doctor Phosphorus in a heated argument, as well as a heartwarming scene of G.I. Robot and Nina Mazursky forming a bond. Although no specific plot details were revealed, the preview offered a glimpse into the upcoming season.

The original incarnation of the team made their debut in Weird War Tales in the 1980s. This group was composed of superhuman soldiers who were sent to combat supernatural and scientific dangers during World War II.

The original Creature Commandos fought monsters in World War II.

The initial members of the Creature Commandos included Warren Griffith, a werewolf, Sgt. Vincent Velcro, a vampire, Pvt. Elliot “Lucky” Taylor, a Frankenstein-inspired creation, and Dr. Myrna Rhodes, a gorgon. The team was under the leadership of Lt. Matthew Shrieve, a human soldier.

During their many escapades, the team encountered other incredible beings of science and magic who would become part of their group, such as J.A.K.E. 2, also known as G.I. Robot, and the ever-living and extraordinarily strong journalist Miss America.

Instead of serving as soldiers, the Creature Commandos are now portrayed as Agents of S.H.A.D.E., a government organization that utilizes monstrous beings to track and eliminate supernatural threats. The agency either recruits or creates these creatures for their specialized task.
