MrBeast’s latest venture, Beast Games, has sparked a flurry of criticism from both viewers and critics alike, who describe it as a troubling display of contemporary media. Released exclusively on Prime Video in December, this competition show pits 1,000 contestants against one another in a series of grueling challenges, all vying for a staggering $5 million prize.
While only one contestant can ultimately claim the grand prize, participants have numerous opportunities to earn monetary rewards throughout the show’s episodes.
High Stakes and Controversial Challenges
The stakes are undeniably high. In one particularly contentious challenge, MrBeast offered four contestants a bribe of $1 million. If they accepted the offer, their team would be eliminated, allowing them to continue playing individually. Another instance saw MrBeast tempting players with a bribe of up to $100,000 under similar conditions. These ethical dilemmas have left contestants in emotionally precarious situations, prompting many viewers to critique the program’s exploitative nature.
Viewer Reactions: A Divide in Opinion
As of now, Beast Games holds a mere 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The feedback reflects a wide range of discontent from the audience, with one reviewer stating, “The drama itself makes you watch it, but it’s difficult to witness contestants reacting as if they’re involved in a life-or-death scenario.”
Another viewer echoed similar sentiments, highlighting, “The intensity of the competition often leads to arguments and emotional outbursts, which could send the wrong message to younger audiences.” A third critic labeled the show as “a pathetic, sweaty, dystopian trainwreck.”
On IMDB, the show mirrors this trend with a subdued score of 5.4/10. Many critiques emphasized the show’s propensity to exploit participants from disadvantaged backgrounds, with one review stating that the show transforms their hardships into entertainment. Another reviewer criticized it for rewarding negative traits such as selfishness and deceit.
Support for Beast Games Amidst Backlash
Despite the overwhelming negativity, a small contingent of viewers remains enthusiastic about the show. Some argue that the program is underrated, with claims of bias against the negative reviews. One individual commented on Rotten Tomatoes, “Many criticisms overlook the more significant aspects of what this show presents.”
Another IMDb user noted the irony in complaints about the show’s fairness, stating, “It’s a MrBeast game show with substantial stakes; it’s not structured to be fair, and that’s the nature of competition.”
Despite this divide in perception, MrBeast has not publicly responded to the poor reviews. Nonetheless, he has proudly announced that Beast Games achieved the status of the number-one show on Prime Video across 82 countries within just 26 hours of its release.
