PC, Xbox, and PlayStation have all seen a huge influx of players in GTA 5 and GTA Online. As crossplay has become a common feature in many popular multiplayer games, it’s natural for fans of the Rockstar Games franchise to wonder if they can join forces with friends on different platforms.
Is Crossplay Available for GTA 5 and GTA Online?
Despite being available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, GTA Online and GTA 5 do not support crossplay. This means that players are unable to join their friends who are on different systems.
Can you play with players on the same gaming console?
Even though the game does not have full cross-platform play capabilities, you can still play GTA Online with others who are using systems within the same console family.
This means that even if you have an Xbox Series X and your friends have Xbox Ones, you can still join lobbies together. The same goes for individuals who have PS4s and PS5s. Just make sure that you are all playing the same version of the game.
You can join or create your own crew to play in GTA Online.
Can you play GTA Online on PC with friends using different launchers?
Regardless of the launcher they own GTA 5 on, PC players can seamlessly play GTA Online with other PC players.
Although the game is accessible through multiple PC launchers, including Steam, Epic Games, and Rockstar’s launcher, the crossplay feature allows for seamless connection and gameplay across all launchers.
Why doesn’t Grand Theft Auto V have crossplay?
Despite the launch of Rockstar’s GTA 5 and its online mode in 2013, crossplay remained a distant dream for gamers. This was due to the Xbox 360 and PS3 nearing the end of their lifecycles, and the existence of several agreements between Xbox and PlayStation that hindered the possibility of crossplay becoming a reality.
In 2014, GTA 5 was released on the Xbox One and PS4, followed by the PC edition in 2015. This was before crossplay became a standard feature in new releases, as expected by gamers.
Role-playing in GTA Online servers is still massively popular.
In 2018, Fortnite became the benchmark for crossplay between different games. This feature was made available for PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices for the first time. Although it is now the norm for multiplayer games, GTA Online has not yet implemented this capability.
While coding may not be a concern, there is a significant amount of balancing adjustments that must be implemented for a game to be truly cross-platform. Players on PC have the advantage of better graphics and higher framerates, while consoles offer aim assist. All of these factors must be taken into account in order to create a fair and even playing field.
Developers’ current plans for the game do not align with the considerable effort that would be required to enable cross-play for GTA Online.
Is Crossplay for GTA 5 and GTA Online Possible in the Future?
Despite the hopes of certain Grand Theft Auto enthusiasts, crossplay was not made available with the release of the Expanded & Enhanced Remaster of GTA 5.
With their attention shifted to GTA 6, it is improbable that Rockstar will incorporate crossplay into GTA Online in the future.
Will GTA 6 have crossplay?
At present, there is no information available regarding the potential inclusion of crossplay in GTA 6.
In December 2023, Rockstar released the first trailer for GTA 6, introducing fans to Jason and Lucia. As more details are unveiled, we will keep you informed if Rockstar will finally include the highly anticipated cross-platform feature in their upcoming game.
