Cubone’s Biggest Mystery: An Age-Old Discussion Among Pokemon Trainers

Cubone’s Biggest Mystery: An Age-Old Discussion Among Pokemon Trainers

Pokedex entries are a significant aspect of the Pokemon series, and the long-standing debate around Cubone’s Pokedex entry has been reignited due to its mysterious nature in-game.

Cubone, which was initially featured in Pokemon Red & Blue, is a Ground-type creature that can evolve into Marowak once it reaches level 28. Despite its endearing appearance, the Pokedex reveals that behind the cuteness lies a heartbreaking tale, as seen with the skull on its head.

The entry for Red & Blue states, “Due to its constant wearing of a skull helmet, the true face of this Pokémon remains a mystery to all.”Although this is a somber fact, its Yellow entry takes it even further.

The creature wears the skull of its late mother, with its cries reverberating within the hollowed-out vessel and transforming into a mournful tune.

Despite being mentioned in current Generations, the idea of Cubone’s skull being a keepsake from its dead mother has faced criticism from certain fans.

A recent discussion on the Pokemon subreddit, sparked by a post from user ‘fgebgrugh’, has rekindled a debate surrounding the origins of Cubone’s skull. The user argued that it was unlikely for every wild Cubone to have inherited the skull of a deceased Marowak.

“The trainer argued that if the records were accurate, it would suggest that each female Marowak would have to perish shortly after laying her initial egg and completely decompose before it hatches. However, the trainer pointed out that when a player leaves a Marowak at a daycare or nursery and returns to find an egg, the female Marowak is still alive.”

Upon hatching from its egg, Cubone is already equipped with a skull on its head. The researchers further explained that this structure could possibly serve as an exoskeleton, much like a turtle’s shell.

Other trainers pointed out that the entry might not be as straightforward as it appears at first glance.

My belief has always been that the skulls are handmade by the mothers, and as the cubones evolve, the skull becomes integrated into their bodies to form the well-known Marowak skull.

Some people believed that the initial Pokedex entry was primarily created to take advantage of the plotline in the games centered around the Marowak’s death in Red, Blue, and their remakes, as well as the Let’s Go titles. Rather than discarding the entry, the writers continued to include it in later Generations.

On the other hand, numerous people disregarded the Pokedex due to its numerous entries that were inconsistent or inaccurate, such as stating that Magcargo’s body temperature was “approximately 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit.”

One player argued that Pokedex entries should not be taken too seriously, stating that if the temperature truly surpassed that of the surface of the sun, human life would not be possible.

Although it is commonly accepted in lore that Cubone wears the skull of its deceased mother, it is clear that this detail does not entirely make sense in-game.
