According to the interview, Yukinobu’s favorite character is Momo, as he invested significant emotion into her creation. He expressed a desire to introduce an endearing female character into the story. Following Momo, his top favorites include Okarun, Aira, and Kinta Sakata.
Ayase Momo
Momo stands out as one of the principal characters in the series. She is a determined and attractive high school girl who firmly believes in ghosts.
In addition to the emotional depth the author infused into Momo’s character, he appreciates her strong-willed nature, which enhances her charm within the narrative and differentiates her from the male protagonist, Okarun.
Ken Takakura
Takakura Ken, affectionately nicknamed Okarun by Momo, takes on the role of the male protagonist in “Dandadan.”He is depicted as socially awkward, with a frail appearance and a timid disposition, coupled with a fascination for UFOs. At first glance, it’s clear that Okarun and Momo are complete contrasts, which may actually be what draws them together.
Yukinobu stated that he favors Okarun for reasons that are quite distinct. He recognizes Okarun’s substantial potential—not just in terms of physical prowess but in his overall character development. While he may seem lacking now, the journey he is on promises growth and eventual blossoming.
Shiratori Aira
Aira plays a significant supporting role in “Dandadan.”Previously an ordinary popular girl at Okarun’s school, her encounter with the supernatural has led her to develop chuunibyo (delusions of grandeur), causing her to perceive Momo as a demon and harbor feelings for Okarun.
The author has indicated that Aira is among his favorite characters, despite her seemingly cold exterior; she is, in fact, quite caring and considerate toward those she values—a trope that Yukinobu appreciates in female characters.
Sakata Kinta
Kinta is a surprising addition to the author’s favorite list, as his role in the series is relatively minor compared to others. Nevertheless, Sakata Kinta serves as one of Okarun and Momo’s chief allies as they confront paranormal challenges, and his brash and condescending demeanor is merely a front.
Yukinobu admires Kinta for his struggles; he aspires to be important and capable, yet often feels inadequate. However, he finds ways to maximize his potential with the resources available to him. According to Yukinobu, Kinta is a character that anyone would want to support.
