Dataminer Alleges The Day Before Developer’s New Game is an Asset Flip

A day after the developers of The Day Before launched a Kickstarter campaign, data miners uncovered information indicating that the newly announced game might merely be an asset flip.

Fntastic, the controversial studio responsible for The Day Before, resurfaced on September 26, 2024, seeking crowdfunding support for what they hope will be a recovery initiative for a game titled Escape Factory. This announcement was quickly met with skepticism from numerous online communities.

Within just 24 hours of the initial news, a dataminer revealed insights that corroborate the internet’s doubts. A post on the Steam Community from developer and data miner Occular Malice provided several examples suggesting that Escape Factory is fundamentally an asset flip.

Occular Malice highlighted on Twitter/X that Fntastic had their announcement post quickly removed, but a web.archive snapshot ensured the comments remained accessible. According to the findings by the dataminer, “The core of the [new] game’s networking, lobby, and matchmaking is all Unity demo code [that’s] available on Github for learning to create multiplayer games.”

The developers of The Day Before removed the game from online platforms a month after its initial launch.

Fntastic’s official Kickstarter page describes Escape Factory as a physics-based, cooperative escape game where four to eight players will traverse “dangerous factories.”

The studio is aiming for over $15,000 in support by the end of October. As of this writing, roughly two dozen backers have contributed nearly $496 for the ongoing project by the creators of The Day Before.

Interestingly, the team founded by brothers Ed and Aisen Gotovtsev previously rejected claims of scams, highlighting that they never solicited crowdfunding and refunded all purchases when The Day Before faced its downfall.

Since then, a documentary has revealed the difficult working conditions that the Gotovtsev-led development team experienced.
