DC Fans’ Speculation: Netflix’s Top Horror Director to Join James Gunn for New Movie

Many die-hard DC Studios fans strongly believe that James Gunn has brought on Mike Flanagan to direct a new film.

The rumors began circulating after fans realized that Gunn, who primarily posts on his Instagram and Threads accounts instead of other social media platforms, had started following Flanagan on Instagram.

The concept of Flanagan directing a horror movie for DC Studios was immediately embraced by fans, who proposed a variety of characters such as Animal Man, Madame Xanadu, and the Justice League Dark, all of whom would fit well with his style.

Flanagan has gained recognition as a horror filmmaker, having helmed Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, as well as successful Netflix productions such as Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher.

If Flanagan plans to enter DC Studios, there will be ample space for the horror filmmaker.

At the time of writing, there has been no comment from either Gunn or Flanagan about a potential film. On social media, Gunn has posted various comic book covers that fans speculate could hint at upcoming projects, like a Deadman cover in March. However, these posts are often just the result of Gunn’s love for comics.

It is also possible that this is a continuation of a previous rumor. There were speculations that Flanagan had proposed a Clayface film for Matt Reeves’ The Batman Universe, but these were never officially confirmed.

Flanagan’s upcoming venture is The Life of Chuck, a dramatic adaptation of the Stephen King novella with the same title.

Meanwhile, DC Studios is getting ready to officially launch this December with Creature Commandos, and will be followed by the Gunn-directed Superman on July 11, 2025.
