Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Removes Controversial Photo Feature

New updates regarding Capcom’s Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster have confirmed that the photo reward system will not feature the ‘Erotica’ category from the original game.

In 2006’s Dead Rising, players had the ability to increase the level of the main character and zombie slayer, Frank West, by earning Prestige Points (PP).

Photographing the in-game action was one method of acquiring said points. For instance, capturing images of zombies fell under the Horror category and resulted in PP. Another category was Erotica, which encompassed photos of upskirts or a woman’s cleavage.

There has been speculation among fans about the possible return of the Erotica bonuses for the upcoming remaster of the zombie game. According to Famitsu, the answer to this question has been confirmed.

The remaster’s different features were outlined by the Japanese publication in an article (via VGC), pointing out that the re-release of Dead Rising does not include the ability to earn Erotica points for taking photos of women.

According to Google Translate, the brief summary from Famitsu states that the evaluation point of “EROTICA”from the original version is absent in this work.

In light of shifting societal attitudes, Capcom’s choice to remove a contentious feature in Dead Rising that involved objectifying women through revealing photos is not unexpected.

This is not the initial instance where a remaster has made alterations in order to address content that had previously received criticism for its portrayal of female characters.

Despite the absence of the camera angles that zoomed in on Miranda Lawson’s backside in the original 2009 release of Mass Effect 2, the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which was released in May 2021, did not include these controversial shots. However, PC mods were eventually able to bring back the cutscenes and their initial blocking.

When Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster launches on Thursday, September 19, it will not only be missing the Erotica category. Back in June, Terence J Rotolo, the original voice actor for Frank West, revealed that Capcom did not reach out to him about reprising his role for the remaster.
