Deadlock’s Yamato – detailed & tragic backstory

Since the game’s official reveal, there has been an increase in the number of people playing Deadlock and they are already impressed by the level of detail Valve has put into the characters for their new MOBA.

Despite only being available through an invite-only Closed Alpha, Deadlock has already gained a significant following after Valve officially announced it on August 23 following months of rumors and leaks.

Despite being in its early stages, Deadlock is already showing great potential and receiving positive feedback from popular streamers and content creators such as shroud and AverageJonas. This can be attributed in large part to the game’s well-developed characters, with players already commending the developers for their handling of their backstories.

This level of detail encompasses not only the intriguing lore, but also the way in which this information is conveyed to the viewers. As noted by a Twitter/X user pointed out, Yamato’s backstory is exclusively written in Japanese, which is fitting for a character who is not fluent in English.

Although they probably couldn’t read the text, the poster found the backstory to be “hilarious but also really cool.”

Some players also mentioned instances where the detail and backstory were seamlessly incorporated into the game. One player recalled an experience where, while playing as a certain character, the shopkeeper would attempt to say thank you in Japanese but continuously stumbled over the words until finally apologizing to the character.

One person mentioned, “she actually uses English when communicating in-game! Although her voice lines are all in Japanese, she always speaks in English when talking to her teammates (such as when pushing a lane or needing help). It’s a nice touch.”

The reason for this is most likely to simplify things for players, as having the character give instructions in Japanese, as one commenter pointed out, would be quite confusing.

Interested in learning about Yamato’s past? One user kindly provided an approximate translation that reveals her true name, Kaori. However, she adopted her brother’s name after he selflessly gave his life for hers as a tribute and due to a misinterpretation upon arriving in America.

Additionally, other Deadlock character bios, such as the one for Lash that bluntly states “Jacob Lash is an a*******,”always manage to entertain players.
