Deadpool & Wolverine slammed as “blasphemy” as fans demand refunds

Criticism is being directed towards Deadpool & Wolverine for allegedly promoting “blasphemy,” and a group of Marvel fans are now requesting refunds.

Despite the majority of Marvel fans enjoying the clever Easter eggs and surprise appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine, a few viewers were dissatisfied with their experience and are seeking a refund.

On July 27, TikTok user chibimallo shared a video where she revealed that she and her husband walked out of the MCU movie after only 30 minutes.

Despite having numerous grievances about the movie’s “disgusting”nature, chibimallo’s main issue with the film was Deadpool’s self-proclaimed title of “Marvel Jesus.”

The concept of Deadpool being a Marvel equivalent of Jesus was introduced in the trailer for the movie, as the wisecracking mercenary hoped to portray himself as the hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Prior to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, there was a noticeable decrease in interest for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as many fans had lost interest after watching Avengers: Endgame.

Despite the initial hesitation, fans’ yearning to return to the theaters for a Marvel Studios production was reignited by the news of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman teaming up as their iconic characters for a thrilling journey through the multiverse.

Due to Deadpool’s tendency to push boundaries, the marketing for the movie embraced this characteristic, leading to the idea that Deadpool was “Marvel Jesus”and would rescue the MCU from its own downfall.

Despite not receiving much backlash during its appearance in the trailers, the inclusion of this joke was still met with disapproval from certain individuals, such as chibimallo, who did not appreciate Marvel’s attempt to make fun of a religious deity.

Despite the backlash, many Marvel fans were swift to point out that the Deadpool franchise has always poked fun at everything and everyone, so those who took offense should not have been surprised by this.

“Did you really expect a Deadpool movie to be all sunshine and puppies?”questioned a fan on X/Twitter.

Another person commented, “It is foolish to go into a DEADPOOL movie expecting him to handle ‘sensitive topics’ with respect.”

Lastly, another Marvel enthusiast highlighted the apparent double standard depicted in the video, stating, “It will always be amusing to witness those who label Gen Z as overly sensitive, crumble under criticism when a fictional character makes a harmless joke about Jesus.”
