Deadpool and Wolverine’s primary antagonist has become even more frightening with the revelation of the inspiration behind their characterizations.
Despite audiences’ awareness of Deadpool 3’s cameos and Easter eggs, little information has been revealed about the villain Cassandra Nova, aside from her being the evil twin sister of Professor X and the main source of conflict in the highly anticipated Marvel film.
However, viewers are now aware of the origins of Nova’s malevolent nature. According to her actress Emma Corrin, they drew inspiration from Hans Landa (played by Christoph Waltz) from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds to shape Nova’s character.
“Despite being the epitome of evil, he has the ability to charm and engage in conversation with ease. It’s disconcerting because he is truly the most wicked person one could encounter. Unlike a typical terrifying villain, he relies on his physical presence to make a statement, often subverting expectations with his actions.”
It appears that Corrin’s decision to draw inspiration from such a larger-than-life character proved to be beneficial, as their co-stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds continuously praised their portrayal of Nova.
According to Harper’s Bazaar, Jackman said that Emma possessed the ability to subtly change and turn on a dime. He also noted that there was an effortless quality to her actions and a hint of danger.
In the same interview, Reynolds also expressed the same feeling, comparing it to working with a versatile tool. He noted that Emma brought a similar energy to the characters of Deadpool and Wolverine, describing it as a mix of mischief, danger, and unpredictability. From their first scene together, the audience is able to understand the villain’s motivations for opposing our heroes.
“Emma’s ability to humanize even the most chaotic characters is what makes her so exceptional. Our love for vilifying villains is only surpassed by our love for sympathizing with them. This is evident in our admiration for Emma’s portrayal of Cassandra Nova from the very beginning.”
Come July 26, moviegoers can catch Deadpool and Wolverine in theaters. In the meantime, you can learn about the film rating for Deadpool 3, the anticipated success at the box office, and the speculation surrounding Taylor Swift’s potential cameo in the movie.
