Deadpool’s Record-Breaking Success in American Box Office

The box office numbers for Deadpool & Wolverine are about to reach $1 billion, marking a major milestone. The film has also achieved another significant feat by surpassing one of the longest-standing records in American cinema.

We can assess the various records that Deadpool & Wolverine have broken thus far: it holds the distinction of being the sixth highest domestic opening of all time, the largest opening for an R-rated film (both in the US and globally), and has already surpassed the total box office earnings of its predecessors in less than two weeks.

As of 2024, Inside Out 2 holds the top spot for highest-grossing movie, bringing in $1.55 million. However, with the same momentum as Barbie surpassing Super Mario, the Merc with a Mouth is expected to continue its success and claim the number one spot.

To further emphasize its success, Deadpool 3 has surpassed a box office record that had been held for two decades, a feat that even Joker couldn’t achieve. Following its second weekend in theaters, Deadpool 3 has now become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time in the US, dethroning The Passion of the Christ.

The film’s domestic earnings have reached $395 million, as Mel Gibson’s biblical epic collected an impressive $370 million during its record-breaking release in 2004.

There have been only six other R-rated films that have surpassed the $300m mark, including both Deadpool movies, Joker, It: Chapter One, Oppenheimer, and American Sniper.

According to MyTimeToShineHello, “Deadpool has now surpassed Jesus in popularity,”while One Take News tweeted, “Deadpool has officially taken over as the Marvel equivalent of Jesus by surpassing The Passion of the Christ at the box office.”

The dominance of Deadpool’s passion remains strong. Additionally, there is the Wolverine character who is also highly regarded,”one commenter wrote, while another user expressed, “There is a demand in America for movies depicting graphic violence and immortal men.”

As previously mentioned by others, Deadpool 2 also makes a reference to Gibson’s film. The character jokingly remarks, “Now my name is being mentioned in the same sentence as Jesus… The Passion of the Christ, then me, at least in the domestic market – we surpassed them overseas, where religious beliefs do not exist.”
