Debate on Celebrity Security: Will Airport Special Entrances Replace Bodyguards for Stars?

Incheon International Airport has unveiled plans for a special entrance aimed at facilitating the passage of celebrities and high-profile individuals, though the decision has sparked mixed reactions from the public.

As reported by the Incheon International Airport Corporation, starting October 28th, a new protocol will be established that allows select individuals—celebrities included—to utilize a designated entry point. This initiative is designed to alleviate congestion and enhance safety, particularly during instances when fans gather to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars.

Entertainment agencies have recently obtained formal communication regarding this update. Celebrities, along with their management, will need to submit an application in advance to gain access to this exclusive entrance. This entry will be the same one previously used by flight crew and pilots, not an entirely new one.

The rationale behind this initiative is clear: the airport often sees large crowds gathering to spot these celebrities, which can create inconveniences and pose safety hazards for everyday travelers. A prime example of this was when actor Byeon Woo-seok encountered backlash due to “overbearing security” measures that blocked gates and checked the tickets of other passengers seeking access to the lounge during his departure for an Asia fan meeting tour.

As news about the dedicated entrance circulates, numerous netizens have reacted negatively, questioning, “What makes celebrities so exceptional?” and suggesting that this amounts to unfair preferential treatment. They assert that while managing crowds is necessary, providing celebrities access to a private entrance is an overreaction.

Conversely, a portion of the public, referencing various incidents involving popular idol groups, argue that a dedicated entrance could actually enhance safety for regular travelers by minimizing the risk of accidents. For example, in June, when the group RIIZE arrived at the airport, an overwhelming crowd formed, resulting in a broken automatic door due to the pressure.

With contrasting views emerging, the priority remains ensuring a safe environment for not only celebrities but also their fans and fellow passengers at the airport.
