Following Eru’s shocking betrayal – a situation made more dubious by his reticence about why he saved you – Mephisto has been freed from his stony confines. Eru harnessed the stone and vessel with the intention of resurrecting Mephisto to protect Nahantu from his wrath.

In an attempt to thwart your and Neyrelle’s intervention against Eru, Mephisto summons the Harbinger of Hatred to challenge you. This entity serves as a direct embodiment of Mephisto himself.

Understanding Mephisto, the Harbinger of Hatred’s Combat Mechanics

The battle commences with the Harbinger of Hatred unleashing corruption across the battleground, restricting your movement to a small area. Akarat joins you and will require a brief recovery period before he can support you. Once he regains his strength, Akarat will cleanse the arena of corruption and strip the Harbinger of Hatred of its immunity, allowing you to inflict damage during this window.

Yet, as the fight progresses, the Harbinger of Hatred will regain immunity. To counter this, you must utilize Akarat’s power. At the beginning of each phase, he transforms into a radiant sphere, which you must collect to harness his energy. Upon acquiring Akarat’s power, your skills will morph into a specialized attack capable of dispelling Mephisto’s immunity, akin to the effects of the conduit shrine.

When the Harbinger of Hatred becomes vulnerable, you can inflict damage until it regains immunity once more.

As the Harbinger of Hatred perpetually spreads corruption (illustrated in the second image), you’ll notice that his attack mechanics share similarities with those you encountered while battling Lilith. His initial move involves slamming the ground with his ears, resulting in a projectile that divides into three, dealing damage along a linear trajectory. Following this, he will execute a final slam that launches five projectiles originating from his head.

When he begins to thrash about, this initiates an attack sequence. The optimal method to evade it is to distance yourself from him while dodging the incoming projectiles. Alternatively, you can negate some of these mechanics if you possess defensive skills.

His melee attacks pose a significant threat, particularly when you’re in close proximity. If your character lacks sufficient health, armor, or defensive buffs from passives or skills, each swipe can deplete over half of your health, compelling you to consume potions rapidly to survive. It’s advisable to conserve your defensive abilities for these pivotal moments as you aim to maintain consistent damage output against the boss.

Throughout the encounter, enemy hollows will continuously spawn, adding to the chaos you need to manage. However, Akarat is there to assist by drawing the Harbinger of Hatred’s focus for a while, giving you opportunities to clear out the swarming enemies or to deal damage to the boss.

By skillfully avoiding these dangerous techniques, you should eventually emerge victorious against Mephisto, the Harbinger of Hatred. Interestingly, this encounter may feel more manageable than fighting Urivar due to Akarat’s involvement. If you’re struggling with survivability, consider employing the mercenary Raheir, whose armor buff can enhance your resilience.
