The Upper Moon Four, Hantengu, creates formidable clones with diverse abilities, leading to some of the most challenging battles in the Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village arc.
In Season 3 of Demon Slayer, we witness the incredible powers of Upper Moon Four, Hantengu. While Muichiro successfully defeats Gyokko, Hantengu continues to pose a significant threat to the Demon Slayer Corps.
Hantengu fights by manifesting various clones from his emotions, including seven distinct personalities: Hantengu, Sekido, Karaku, Aizetsu, Urogi, Zohakuten, and Urami. Each clone possesses unique abilities, making them all incredibly strong.
Given their origins as clones of Upper Moon Four, these entities are not easily vanquished. It requires the combined strength of Tanjiro, Genya, Mitsuri, and Nezuko to take down this powerful foe. We will analyze each of Upper Moon Four Hantengu’s different forms as depicted in the anime.
Hantengu: The Manifestation of Cowardice
Upper Moon Hantengu’s primary persona is characterized by intense cowardice and anxiety. He displays paranoid, terrified, and delusional traits, easily startled by even minor events, often crying out in fear.
This form allows Hantengu to channel his emotions into younger versions of himself through his Blood Demon Art. Each clone carries a kanji on its tongue that represents the main emotion it embodies.
Each of these clones has a distinctive appearance, unique skills, and an arsenal, all demonstrating at least Upper-Rank level strength, resembling younger versions of Hantengu. Severing Hantengu’s head activates his Blood Demon Art, splitting him into two identical clones that represent rage and joy.
Sekido: The Manifestation of Anger
Sekido embodies Upper Moon Hantengu’s anger, exhibiting traits of constant irritation and rage, even towards his fellow clones. He becomes easily enraged when the other clones fail to meet his expectations or are defeated by the Demon Slayers.
Sekido’s Blood Demon Art, ‘Electricity Generation,’ allows him to create electricity that flashes blue and red. He activates this power by stabbing his Khakkhara into the ground. His electricity is potent enough to paralyze opponents instantly, even in midair, leaving them unconscious within seconds.
With a wide area of effect, Sekido can incapacitate multiple foes simultaneously. He also has the ability to absorb Karaku, Urogi, and Aizetsu’s bodies, merging to form Zohakuten.
Karaku: The Manifestation of Pleasure
As the personification of Upper Moon Hantengu’s pleasure, Karaku exhibits a carefree attitude. During battles, he compliments Genya, Tanjiro, and Nezuko, treating the fight more like a game.
His Blood Demon Art, ‘Wind Blasts,’ enables him to generate powerful gusts of wind using his maple leaf-shaped Uchiwa. Karaku can create winds strong enough to knock Muichiro out, demolish buildings, and overwhelm both Demon Slayers and demons with its immense force just by swinging his Uchiwa.
Karaku strategically uses his ability to engulf the battlefield in formidable wind gusts, hampering the movement of his opponents as if they were caught in a tornado. However, Nezuko demonstrates that this ability can be countered by anyone wielding his Uchiwa.
Aizetsu: The Manifestation of Sorrow
Aizetsu represents Upper Moon Hantengu’s sorrow, exhibiting melancholic and negative feelings. He is the calmest of the manifestations, as he prefers to analyze and strategize against his foes rather than engage in petty disputes with the other clones.
Aizetsu can manipulate his flesh, similar to other demons, allowing him to transform into a Jumonji Yari (a cross-shaped spear).
His Blood Demon Art, ‘Spear Projection,’ enables him to launch thrusting attacks over long distances with his Yari, allowing him to target enemies from afar. Remarkably, Aizetsu remained undeterred when Genya shot him with a shotgun loaded with Nichirin steel rounds, even able to mend his neck.
Urogi: The Manifestation of Joy
Urogi is the most exuberant of Hantengu’s clones, embodying joy. Like Karaku, Urogi sees his fights with the Demon Slayers as mere games.
His unique physiology grants him avian traits, including large feathered wings and sharp claws. His wings allow him to fly at incredible speeds, while his claws are sharp enough to slice through diamonds.
Urogi’s Blood Demon Art, ‘Sonic Scream,’ produces powerful sound waves. When he screams, it can momentarily incapacitate Tanjiro, causing him to bleed from his nose and ears.
Zohakuten: The Manifestation of Hatred
Zohakuten is formed when Sekido absorbs the other clones, sharing their personality traits. He stands as the strongest of Hantengu’s clones and carries a foul mouth, often insulting his adversaries.
Zohakuten is also the most astute, alongside Sekido. His primary Blood Demon Art, ‘Wood Manipulation,’ allows him to manipulate and shape wood from the surrounding flora. This power is activated by tapping the drums on his back.
Wood Manipulation is versatile for both close-quarters and long-range combat. By merging with Sekido, Karaku, Aizetsu, and Urogi, Zohakuten can leverage their Blood Demon Arts to a much greater extent, alongside transferring their abilities to a wooden dragon he creates.
Urami: The Manifestation of Resentment
Urami represents Upper Moon Hantengu’s resentment, sharing hypocritical and delusional traits similar to Zohakuten and Hantengu. He perceives himself as weak and innocent while blaming Tanjiro for not recognizing his innocence.
Urami harbors resentment for being punished for crimes he deems unjust. He can significantly increase his size, allowing Hantengu to hide within him as a final attempt to evade the Demon Slayers.
Urami’s Blood Demon Art, ‘Ability Combination,’ enables him to utilize the Blood Demon Arts of the other clones. Although not explicitly mentioned, Urami employed Urogi’s sonic scream ability to stun Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya.
