Fans of Demon Slayer are in for a comedic treat as the creator of the manga has depicted the main characters in gender-swapped versions.
Typically, mangakas include small tidbits or humorous segments as bonuses in their manga volumes. Koyoharu Gotouge, the creator of Demon Slayer, also followed this practice in some of his other highly praised works. While certain extras provide a deeper understanding of the characters, others are simply hilarious.
The author decided to change the genders of four main characters for one of the volume extras. Despite the alteration, Inosuke’s appearance remains largely the same (minus his boar head, of course). This comedic effect is expected, but Inosuke’s contrasting looks and personality never fail to amuse.
Furthermore, we have Nezuko, who appears just as handsome as a boy. In her gender-swapped form, she exudes a more somber demeanor. The final two images add an intriguing twist – Zenitsu sports pigtails and delicate freckles as a girl. Despite her unconventional eyebrows, it’s not a complete disaster.

Tanjiro stands out as the most remarkable gender-swapped character. In his female form, known as ‘Tenko’, everything is altered except for his hair and earrings. Tenko possesses thick eyebrows, small eyes, and protruding teeth.
Unsurprisingly, the boy version has been favored by fans upon witnessing this. A Reddit user even commented, “Tanjiro was treated unfairly.”
“The poor boy… he was treated unfairly,”chimed in another person, as a third person exclaimed, “What was the reason for treating Tanjiro in such a manner?”
In response to someone’s comment asking if Tanjiro was considered unattractive in canon, another user stated, “I don’t believe so. Daki mentioned that he had beautiful eyes. Additionally, his female version bears no resemblance to him.”
“As another person pointed out, Daki referred to Tanjiro as ‘ugly’ with pretty eyes, while Inosuke was called beautiful. This seemingly establishes the dynamic of Tanjiro being the ‘ugly’ husband and Kanao as the ‘cute’ wife, according to the characters’ perspectives in the universe.”
Despite not having a traditionally attractive appearance as a girl, Tanjiro is fully prepared to defeat Muzan in the highly anticipated Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie trilogy.
