Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc Episode 1: Anime vs Manga Comparison

The anime made its long-awaited return with the premiere of Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 1, following the conclusion of the Swordsmith Village Arc in June 2023. As previously stated, the first episode of the new season had a longer runtime as it was also part of the Demon Slayer To the Hashira Training Arc movie.

Despite being only nine chapters long, the Hashira Training Arc is well-known among fans of the series. As a result, the first episode of Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc is expected to cover all of the available source material for the current season. In order to do so, Ufotable has made several alterations to the anime adaptation in comparison to the original manga. Let’s take a closer look at these changes.

Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc: Episode 1 – Anime vs. Manga Differences

The Hashiras Infiltrate the Infinity Castle

In the opening scene of Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 1, Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa and Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro were joined by two demon slayers on a mission to investigate reports of people being abducted by demons. The two Hashiras were determined to put an end to these incidents.

During the mission, the two Hashiras were able to locate where the demons were taking the kidnapped people. They successfully rescued a woman who had been kidnapped right in front of them. However, due to a mistake, they inadvertently entered the Infinity Castle and were unable to apprehend the demon, who took the opportunity to escape. This specific event was not depicted in the manga series, particularly within the Hashira Training Arc storyline.

Shinobu entrusts Kanao to oversee Butterfly Mansion while she is away

As episode 1 of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc began, Kanao Tsuyuri was shown returning to the Butterfly Mansion following a mission. Upon her arrival, Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, updated her on the current situation, including the progress made against the two Upper Moon Demons, Nezuko’s ability to withstand sunlight, and the upcoming battle against Kibutsuju Muzan and his demons.

Despite having these events on her mind, Shinobu attended a Hashira meeting at the Ubuyashiki Estate. As a result, she requested Kanao to take care of the Butterfly Mansion and its occupants, including Tanjiro, Genya, and others. This particular scene was not portrayed in the manga.

Gyomei Himejima shares the Hashira Training plan with his fellow Hashira

Despite depicting the Hashira meeting in the same manner as the manga, Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 1 included an additional scene to the event.

The manga did not depict the Hashiras organizing the Hashira Training program, but the anime portrayed Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima as the mastermind behind the program. He was also the one who invited the former Sound Hashira Uzui Tengen to assist with the training.

Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru’s roles in Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 1

Although the manga portrays Tengen Uzui’s wives – Suma, Makio, and Hinatsuru – assisting their husband with the training regimen, the anime featured additional scenes. In these scenes, the three wives are shown cooking for the demon slayers and inquiring about the training program from Tengen Uzui. His responses to their queries provided insight into the structure of the training regimen for fans.

Kagaya expresses gratitude towards Amane Ubayashiki

The first episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc featured Amane taking care of a sick Kagaya Ubuyashiki. During their time together, Amane shared with Kagaya the Hashiras’ proposal for a training program designed to help demon slayers obtain the powerful Demon Slayer mark. Grateful for her care, Kagaya expressed his gratitude to Amane. This particular scene was not included in the original manga.

Meeting at Ubuyashiki Mansion: A Later Event in the Manga

In the first episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc, Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s messenger crow finds Tamayo. The crow then extends an invitation to Tamayo to join them at the Ubuyashiki Mansion, where she can collaborate with Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho in investigating Nezuko Kamado’s condition.

This particular scene takes place significantly later in the manga. It appears that Ufotable has rearranged the events to align them perfectly with the runtime.
