Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episode 2: Tamayo’s Acceptance and Giyu’s Past Revealed

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 11:15 pm JST, the second episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc aired. Titled “Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka’s Pain,”the episode explores Giyu’s past and his relationship with Sabito, shedding light on his doubts about being worthy of the Water Hashira role. After Tanjiro’s persistent efforts, Giyu decides to join the Hashira training.

In the meantime, Lady Tamayo responds to Master Ubuyashiki’s invitation to join the Demon Slayer Corps in their mission to defeat Muzan. The second episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc picks up directly from the end of the first episode of season 5, where Lady Tamayo is speaking with Master Kaguya Ubuyashiki/Oyakata Sama’s messenger crow. The episode opens with Yushiro’s growing concern upon seeing the crow.

The crow calms the worried Tamayo by assuring her that she and Yushiro will be safe. It also relays a message from the Master, inviting Tamayo to join forces with the Demon Slayer Corps to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji. Additionally, the crow informs her of Master Ubuyashiki’s plans and invites her to the Ubuyashiki Mansion to learn about Nezuko’s ability to withstand sunlight with Shinobu Kocho.

As a demon, Tamayo is taken aback when she is invited to the headquarters of the Demon Slayer Corps. Just as the crow leaves, Yushiro arrives, excited to receive the good news from Tamayo. Yushiro urges them to escape soon, assuring Tamayo that all preparations have been completed. However, Tamayo refuses, explaining that Nezuko’s ability to withstand the sun has triggered a chain of important events.

Tamayo references “the event of that day,”alluding to the critical clash and face-off between Muzan, herself, and Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the most formidable demon slayer of all time. She clarifies to Yushiro that this significant moment has been in the making since their encounter, informing him that they will relocate to the Ubuyashiki household.

Episode 2: Tanjiro’s Mission to Recruit Giyu for the Hashira Training

In episode 2 of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc, Tanjiro is presented with a letter from Master Ubuyashiki. The letter requests Tanjiro’s assistance in persuading Giyu Tomioka to join the Hashira Training. Master Ubuyashiki expresses his desire to speak with Giyu, but explains that his declining health is preventing him from doing so.

Hence, he advises Tanjiro to remain steadfast and patient with Giyu, noting that Giyu tends to distance himself. Ubuyashiki stresses the significance of solidarity within the Demon Slayer Corps for the imminent final confrontation against Muzan Kibutsuji. Tanjiro willingly agrees to this plea.

The second episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc picks up with Tanjiro, who is still recovering from his leg injury, seeking guidance from Aoi. He hopes to find a way to reassure someone who is feeling isolated and alone. Although Aoi is unable to offer a definitive solution, she kindly prepares some onigiri for Tanjiro and Giyu.

Upon meeting the latter, Tanjiro expresses his desire to train under him. However, Giyu sternly refuses, voicing his disappointment in Tanjiro’s inability to master Water Breathing. He reminds Tanjiro that he was meant to take on the position of Water Hashira, which is currently vacant. Despite this, Giyu clarifies that he is not the Water Hashira, though he does not offer an explanation.

Initially, Giyu displays a lack of interest in continuing the conversation with Tanjiro and refuses to train him. However, Tanjiro’s persistent efforts to persuade him eventually prove successful, causing Giyu to open up about why he does not see himself as the Water Hashira. As they talk, Giyu’s past and his relationship with Sabito are uncovered.

Giyu reveals that he and Sabito trained together under Urokodaki and that during their final selection test, Sabito saved several people, including Giyu. Unfortunately, Sabito was the only one to die that year, while everyone he rescued successfully passed the test.

Tanjiro shares in Giyu’s pain and comprehends his decision to not see himself as a Hashira, recalling the sacrifice made by Rengoku. However, he also recalls Inosuke’s advice and reminds Giyu that they must persevere and fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to them.

The importance of this realization brings back to Giyu the words spoken to him by Sabito. As a result, Giyu ultimately decides to partake in the training. In the meantime, Tanjiro challenges him to a soba eating competition, during which they discuss the training and mention Shinobu.

Closing Events of Episode 2: Shinobu’s Revelation on How to Kill the Demon Who Killed Kanae Kocho in the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc

In episode 2 of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc, Shinobu is shown talking to Kanao. Kanao expresses her wish to train under Shinobu, but Shinobu explains that she cannot participate in the training and instead invites her for a conversation.

During their conversation, Kanao expresses her heartfelt desire to train under Shinobu, bringing joy to both of them. The episode ends with Shinobu on the verge of revealing the identity of the demon that killed her sister Kanae, as well as explaining how to defeat it.
