The Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc: Episode 7 – Himejima’s Past and Tanjiro’s Completion of Training

In episode 7 of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc, the scene begins with Zenitsu’s Kasugai crow, Chuntaro, flying in with a letter. The camera then cuts to where we left off in the previous episode, with Tanjiro and Inosuke struggling to move the boulder while Zenitsu lags behind. It is at this moment that Chuntaro delivers the letter to Zenitsu.

After a long time, Tanjiro successfully moves his boulder one cho, signifying the end of his training under Himejima as a Hashira. Despite his accomplishment, he immediately falls unconscious due to severe dehydration. Just as he believes he may not survive, Himejima appears and saves him, offering him water and showing his recognition of Tanjiro’s efforts.

Nevertheless, Tanjiro refuses to accept Himejima’s acknowledgment with humility, feeling undeserving. This prompts Himejima to elaborate on his reasons, which are rooted in his past.

Himejima recounts his experience of caring for orphans at a temple. The children lived harmoniously until one of them broke the rule of returning by nightfall and encountered a demon. In a desperate attempt to save himself, the child led the demon to the temple, extinguished the protective wisteria incense, and sacrificed the other children to the demon. Tragically, only the youngest child, Sayo, followed Himejima’s instructions and survived.

Despite his blindness, Himejima fought the demon with unwavering determination, surprising Tanjiro. He successfully defeated the demon and saved Sayo. However, Sayo falsely accused Himejima of killing the children, causing him deep emotional scars. Himejima attributes her accusation to the panic and confusion of the situation, but it still had a profound impact on his life.

Despite the demon’s body disintegrating in daylight, there was no proof to clear Himejima’s name. As a result, he was charged with murder and faced imprisonment and a death sentence. However, Master Ubuyashiki’s intervention ultimately saved him from this fate. This experience left him with lingering doubts, including towards Tanjiro.

Upon witnessing Tanjiro’s sincere actions and unwavering honesty, Himejima was convinced of his worthiness. He declared that Tanjiro had earned his respect and announced the end of his training under him. He vowed to continue standing by Tanjiro’s side, to which Tanjiro responded with deep appreciation.

After Tanjiro arrives at Giyu’s training grounds, the episode shifts focus to him encountering Giyu in the middle of a sparring session with the Wind Hashira, Sanemi. Tanjiro is amazed to see that he is now able to match the movements of the Hashiras. During their fight, the wooden swords they are using break, and Sanemi suggests a fistfight. However, Tanjiro misunderstands and steps in, causing another argument between him and Sanemi.

In the midst of their argument, he lets it slip that Ohagi is Sanemi’s preferred dish. This causes Sanemi to lose his temper, resulting in him launching Tanjiro into the air and rendering him unconscious. When he regains consciousness, Tanjiro finds himself in the company of Giyu, who informs him that Sanemi has left and that their confrontation was simply a part of their Hashira training.
