The manga series Demon Slayer has captivated readers with its array of incredibly strong characters, many of whom draw their formidable powers from the traumatic experiences of their childhood. The history of Obanai Iguro is particularly heartbreaking; he endured months of torment at the hands of both his family and a demon. Because he was born with heterochromia, Obanai’s family decided to offer him to a Serpent demon, believing it would appease their dark deity. This led to a life where he was treated horrifically due to his looks.

Imprisoned in a dark cage, Obanai was forced to consume extravagant foods while suffering under the watchful gaze of the demon. In a cruel twist, the Serpent demon scarred his mouth to make him resemble it. His hellish ordeal concluded when Gyomei Himejima defeated the demon, liberating him at last.

Conversely, Mitsuri Kanroji possessed immense strength, which ironically repelled potential suitors. They were turned off by her pink hair and insatiable hunger. Before fully embracing her true self, Mitsuri went to great lengths to hide her power, even dying her hair black and altering her eating habits. Just like Obanai, she too faced discrimination due to her unique appearance.

Those familiar with the Demon Slayer narrative would recognize that Obanai fell head over heels for Mitsuri at first sight. He even crafted stockings that matched her hair, which reflected one of Mitsuri’s deeper insecurities that she had to confront to embrace herself fully. In contrast, Obanai felt unworthy of her love due to his background as a thief.

Yet, Mitsuri looked past his origins and held him dear. Despite their painful histories, the bond they share flourishes as they accept and support each other’s vulnerabilities.

Whereas Obanai was self-conscious about his scars, Mitsuri found beauty in them, as she demonstrated in the first season of the anime. While she initially sought to conceal her strength, Obanai not only appreciated her capabilities but respected her because of them, often admiring the resilience in powerful individuals.

Conclusion

The narratives within the Demon Slayer series highlight various insecurities and hardships faced by the characters. Nonetheless, both the Serpent Hashira and the Love Hashira have embraced their flaws, cherishing one another for their true selves.

Despite their contrasting personalities, they harmonize beautifully, shaped by their pasts to love one another unconditionally.
