The second episode of Demon Slayer season 4 was highly enjoyable as it centered on Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira. Tomioka is often overlooked in the animanga series, as he has not been given much screen time. Moreover, his actions towards the other Hashiras have always been a mystery to fans.
This specific episode not only clarified previous questions but also provided more depth to the character. In addition to Giyu Tomioka, there were numerous other noteworthy aspects. The most significant among them was the inclusion of anime-original scenes.
As expected, conversations about the comparison between the anime and manga versions of Demon Slayer season 4 episode 2 are sure to arise. Ufotable has once again demonstrated their ability to seamlessly incorporate original scenes into the animanga series without disrupting its flow.
Demon Slayer Season 4 Episode 2: Anime-Original Content Takes Center Stage
The episode opened with a scene of Yushiro cleaning the bookshelves in a hidden house. This was where he and Lady Tamayo lived, working towards their goal of finding a way to protect humans from demons without attracting the attention of Muzan or his followers. Although not in the manga, this brief sequence provided valuable context for viewers. The manga jumps straight to Tomioka being interrupted by Tanjiro.
Instead, the decision was made to prioritize Tamayo’s conversation in the beginning. Additionally, Demon Slayer season 4 episode 2 included a new scene unique to the anime where Tanjiro speaks with Aoi. Initially, she believes that Tanjiro is eager to resume his training, but he actually wants to know how to show someone that they are not alone without saying it outright. This entire sequence was not originally depicted in the manga. In the source material, Tanjiro receives Ubuyashiki’s letter and the scene then transitions to Giyu being interrupted by the arrival of the young demon hunter.
The anime expanded upon the scenes and included additional frames of Tanjiro navigating through the estate while carrying Onigiri made by Aoi for him and Giyu Tomioka. In comparison, the manga only depicted a brief interaction between Giyu and Tanjiro. However, in Demon Slayer season 4 episode 2, this interaction was further developed with the addition of anime-original scenes where Tanjiro asks irritating questions that bother Giyu.
One could observe significant changes in comparison to the manga in Demon Slayer season 4 episode 2. Giyu’s backstory was further explored by Ufotable, allowing fans to witness his battles against the Hand Demon and Sabito during the Final Selection. However, the anime remained faithful to the manga when it came to Kanao Tsuyuri’s conversation with Shinobu Kocho. Additionally, a small but notable addition was Giyu Tomioka’s inquiry about Shinobu’s absence in training the demon hunters, which took place during a conversation with Tanjiro at the Soba Noodle shop. This led to a friendly food competition between the two.
