Demon Slayer: Which Hashira is Tanjiro closest to? Explored

The Demon Slayer anime series has an exceptional cast of characters that provides fans with highly entertaining performances. Along with Ufotable’s renowned animation, the series also showcases intricate character development. Due to its uncomplicated plot, the series heavily relies on its characters to propel the story forward.

Tanjiro Kamado is a beloved character among fans for his pure and empathetic nature as the protagonist of the series. He consistently displays a deep level of care and affection towards his loved ones and selflessly puts his life on the line every day to protect humanity from the threat of demons.

Despite having a positive relationship with his fellow demon hunters and Hashiras, Tanjiro seems to have a particularly strong connection with one specific Hashira, as shown in the manga series.

Although many anime-only fans may assume that Kyojuro Rengoku was the closest Hashira to Tanjiro, this is not the case. In fact, it was Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, who was the closest to Tanjiro. This is not to say that Tanjiro was not close to Rengoku, but their time together was brief compared to the impact Rengoku had on him throughout the series.

Despite being one of Tanjiro’s closest allies in the series, Giyu Tomioka’s actions may not always reflect this. Initially, he was prepared to kill Tanjiro’s sister, but ultimately chose to spare her, going against the strict rules of the Demon Slayer Corps. He then played a crucial role in Tanjiro’s journey as a demon hunter by directing him to Urokodaki, who trained him. Furthermore, he demonstrated his trust in Nezuko by accepting the consequences and offering his own life if she were to harm a human.

Despite not receiving recognition as a demon hunter from every Hashira, Tanjiro was deeply moved by the support they showed him. This bond between them was the foundation of their relationship, and despite the lack of focus on their interactions in the anime, their connection was undeniably strong.

Nevertheless, in the latter parts of the manga, there are significant moments that highlight the strong bond between the characters. In the upcoming storyline of the series, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of Giyu Tomioka’s past. He was forced to experience a tragic loss when his sister selflessly gave her life to protect him. Similarly, his friend Sabito also risked his own life to save Giyu from the deadly Hand Demon during the Final Selection.

Despite his lack of knowledge about Giyu Tomioka’s past, Tanjiro was able to offer support and uplift his spirits at a critical moment. This pivotal event led to Giyu playing a crucial role in the defeat of Akaza, the Upper Moon 3 demon.

Additionally, Giyu has consistently aided Tanjiro throughout his journey, going as far as saving him from the formidable Lower Moon demon, Riyu. These are just some of the factors that have solidified Tanjiro’s strong bond with Giyu Tomioka, setting him apart as the closest Hashira in the Demon Slayer anime series.
