According to recent reports, Denzel Washington is poised to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where he is expected to portray one of Doctor Strange’s most notorious adversaries.
In the final scenes of *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*, two significant events occur: Doctor Strange develops a third eye and encounters Clea, played by Charlize Theron, who alerts him to the “incursion”caused by his previous choices and urges him to assist her in rectifying it. This scene was unveiled over two years ago, yet Marvel has hardly provided any significant updates since then. Rumors regarding *Doctor Strange 3* have circulated, including speculation about Sam Raimi possibly returning to direct and the film potentially adapting the *Time Runs Out* narrative prior to *Avengers: Secret Wars*.
According to a report from Production Weekly, Denzel Washington is rumored to be cast as Dormammu, the formidable villain who appeared in giant form in the 2016 *Doctor Strange* film.

To provide some context, Dormammu is an inter-dimensional being who governs the Dark Dimension and is known as the Lord of the Dark Dimension. He is also the uncle of Clea and the sibling of Umar, another well-known foe of Doctor Strange.
Dormammu possesses immense powers, including energy projection, teleportation, time manipulation, transformation of size and matter, and even resurrection. Doctor Strange has warned that he poses a threat to “the life of the universe itself,” stating that if Dormammu fully exerted his power, “no one would be able to withstand him.”
In the original film, Dormammu was voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, so it’s likely that this time around, he’ll manifest in a more tangible, direct form, provided the claims hold true.
However, it’s important to note that Production Weekly’s accuracy has been questionable in the past; for instance, it previously asserted that Matt Reeves was working on a *Mr. Freeze* film alongside *The Batman 2*, which James Gunn later confirmed was not happening.
Should this rumor prove accurate, fans have expressed various concerns. One individual remarked, “Not to sound overly cynical, but if they underutilize Denzel like they did with Christian Bale, it would be heartbreaking.”
Another fan commented, “Let’s not squander incredible talent on a forgettable antagonist.” A different voice added, “I’m skeptical since Denzel typically doesn’t align with MCU projects, but anything is possible.”
While some fans are intrigued by the idea, they exercise caution. One user declared, “Denzel is one of my all-time favorite actors; I hope this is true, but I’m taking it with a grain of salt.” Another expressed, “I never imagined seeing Denzel in either a Raimi or an MCU film. The idea of possibly seeing both is surreal, especially with him taking on a villain role.”
