Yoon Seong-ho, known for his role in creating a modern and trendy image of Buddhism through EDM music, has recently joined forces with Buddhist Monk New Jin in a new movie. Despite facing criticism from the Malaysian Buddhist community, Yoon continues to be loved for his unique approach to spreading Buddhist teachings. In November of last year, Yoon officially changed his name to “New Jin”and has been making appearances at various events, receiving a warm reception from audiences.
On the 3rd of the month (local time), he put on a monk’s attire and took to the stage at a club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His performance quickly gained traction on social media, drawing a significant amount of attention.
Despite the performance receiving criticism in Malaysia, Wickashion, a Malaysian lawmaker, expressed agreement with the request made by the Malaysian Youth Buddhist Association to ban Korean DJs from performing at the Kuala Lumpur Club. According to Wickashion, the performance angered the Malaysian Buddhist community by misrepresenting the value and teachings of Buddhism.
The speaker also urged the Minister of Home Affairs, Republic of Korea, and the police to take action in preventing DJs from entering Malaysia, in order to uphold the sanctity of Buddhism and maintain religious harmony.
As a result, the monk’s scheduled performance at a club in Kuala Lumpur on the 21st was canceled. The club stated, “In consideration of social harmony, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the performance.”
Despite facing criticism in Malaysia, Monk Newzin remains active. On the 12th, he will showcase his DJing skills at the Jogye Temple Lotus Lantern Festival in Seoul, and is also scheduled to make an appearance on JTBC’s “Newsroom” later that same afternoon.
The “Newsroom”has become a popular spot for inviting socially and culturally influential celebrities or those who have risen to fame as a “popular trend.”Previous guests have included Lee Jung-jae, Song Kang-ho, Eom Jung-hwa, Jung Woo-sung, Park Eun-bin, Jung Hae-in, Son Seok-gu, Park Kyu-young, Yoo Hae-jin, and Lee Na-young, showcasing their immense popularity and appeal.
Yoon Seong-ho shared a video of his performance in Malaysia on his social media accounts. The footage captured locals enthusiastically enjoying New Jin’s performance, indicating their strong reception and popularity in the country. In a subtle response to criticism directed towards New Jin, Yoon Sung-ho indirectly addressed the issue. Fans were quick to show their unwavering support for New Jin as well.
