Guardians who continue to log in to the original Destiny have recently encountered an unexpected update—marking the first such change in more than seven years.

Despite its destruction during the Red War in Destiny 2, The Tower, once the heart of operations for the Vanguard and a social hub for players, remains intact in the first installment of the game. This recent surprise brings back The Dawning, an in-game event resembling festive celebrations similar to Christmas. Its reappearance in Destiny’s Tower has left many puzzled, especially since Bungie officially concluded support for the original game back in 2017 with the launch of Destiny 2.

Unexpected Festivities

The reasons for The Dawning’s return in 2025 remain unclear. However, a popular hypothesis suggests that this festive surprise might be the result of an unintended oversight. According to YouTuber Breshi’s video published on January 6, there was a previously planned event known as Days of Dawning that was intended for January 2016 during The Taken King expansion. It seems that this event was set with a distant date that now coincidentally aligns with the current state of the game—January 5, 2025.

Breshi highlighted unused assets from this scrapped event, which intriguingly match the decorations now seen in Destiny’s Tower.

This theory, although yet to be confirmed, raises questions about why—apart from the festive decor—no other alterations have been introduced to the game. Players have noticed the absence of new items, missions, or activities to accompany these celebrations.

Regardless of the reason behind this surprise update, it poses an intriguing scenario for players to ponder. Will Bungie choose to restore Destiny’s Tower to its typical state, or will the decorations remain indefinitely? The Dawning, along with events like the Sparrow Racing League and the Festival of the Lost, has historically been a staple of Destiny’s annual festivities.

Unlike the Sparrow Racing League, the other events, including The Dawning, have been consistently revived in Destiny 2, with the latest iteration of The Dawning wrapping up on December 31, 2024.
