As 2025 approaches, Destiny 2 is poised to embark on a groundbreaking journey with an innovative content delivery model. This new strategy aims to minimize downtime between updates and reduce the burden associated with large-scale annual expansions.
Beginning in mid-2025, the initiative, codenamed Frontiers, will introduce two major expansions, titled Apollo and Behemoth. The Apollo expansion is set to launch in summer, followed by Behemoth in winter.
While Bungie has yet to fully disclose how these expansions will shape the future of Destiny 2 following The Final Shape, there is growing apprehension within the community concerning the game’s trajectory due to a diminishing player base. However, the studio has shared an overview of what players can anticipate over the next year and beyond. Here’s a comprehensive look at the upcoming content starting with the final Episode, Episode Heresy.
Upcoming Major Update: Episode Revenant
Episode Revenant Act 3 is the next significant update for Destiny 2, scheduled to arrive on January 7, 2025, coinciding with the Weekly Reset.
Introducing Episode Heresy (Release Date: February 4)
Following Echoes and Revenant, Episode Heresy will be the third and concluding Episode, launching on February 4. While it remains unclear if Oryx’s flagship will return as an explorable Patrol Zone or feature the favored Court of Oryx activity, players can expect the standard seasonal elements alongside new features, such as the Heretical Arsenal.
First introduced in Bungie’s end-of-year announcement, this arsenal will likely mirror Into the Light’s BRAVE weapons, although details remain sparse. Bungie emphasizes that these new items will be clearly appealing when they appear in players’ inventories.
So far, here’s what we know will be included in Episode Heresy:
- Seasonal Weapons
- Hive-Themed Armor
- Heretical Arsenal
- New Dungeon
- Seasonal Activities
Exploring Codename Frontiers
Codename Frontiers signifies Destiny 2’s major expansions scheduled for 2025: Apollo and Behemoth. These expansions promise a refreshed narrative approach, featuring unconventional campaigns, some of which Bungie describes as nonlinear, akin to a Metroidvania-style experience. Each expansion will be divided into two major updates.
The expansions, while maintaining a consistent structure, will offer distinct experiences. Notably, Raids and Dungeons will alternate between expansions—with each year seeing the first expansion introduce Raids and the second focusing on Dungeons.
During the Frontiers era, content is categorized into three main types:
Expansion
- New Stories
- New Locations
- New Missions
- New Weapons
- New Gear
- New Raids and Dungeons
Seasonal Update
- New and Reprised Activities
- New Gear and Artifact Modifications
- New Modifiers and Challenges
- New Sandbox Meta
- New Events
Rewards Pass
- Exotic Weapon & Ornament
- Legendary Weapon and Armor Ornaments
- Gear Upgrade Resources
- Cosmetics and More
Two major expansions, Apollo and Behemoth, will debut for Destiny 2 in 2025.
Apollo Expansion (Summer 2025)
According to Bungie, the narrative of Apollo will unfold across numerous threads that players can explore in a non-linear manner. This innovative storytelling approach differentiates it from previous expansions like Lightfall, which were linear and mission-based. Players will have the opportunity to revisit any storylines they may have missed during their initial experience of Apollo.
The Apollo expansion will span from summer to fall and will be divided into two primary updates, Arsenal and Surge. To enhance replayability, one of these updates will introduce new challenges and rewards for the six-player Raid activity, akin to existing Raids.
Behemoth Expansion (Winter 2025)
With its release slated for late 2025, details on Behemoth remain limited. However, it is anticipated to feature another innovative campaign structure and will include a new Dungeon as its endgame activity, along with enhanced rewards.
Starting with Behemoth, access to Dungeons will no longer require separate Dungeon Keys, and players can expect expanded rewards, including complete weapon and armor sets, bringing them in line with Raids.
The Future Beyond Frontiers
Bungie has not yet revealed plans for content following the Frontiers expansions. Given that Behemoth is expected to last until spring 2026, insights into the next chapters of Destiny 2 will likely emerge later in 2025. Stay tuned for updates as new information becomes available.
