Destiny 2 Dev Defends Weapon Sunrising Amidst Player Controversy

Bungie’s decision to remove the power cap on legacy weapons has been defended by Destiny 2’s senior game designer Josh Kulinski, who asserts that the move is crucial for the success of the game.

A Destiny 2 developer recently took to Twitter to defend the studio’s choice to eliminate the power cap on legacy weapons. This decision, dubbed “sunrising,”was initially made to sunset these weapons and encourage players to experiment with new ones, thus refreshing the game’s sandbox.

As The Final Shape approaches, changes are being implemented that have sparked controversy among the player base. While some were pleased with the announcement, as it meant they could use their previously retired weapons again, others were disappointed and upset as they had already gotten rid of their gear.

Kulinski clarified that in order to create the optimal game, the team had to deviate from their initial plan. Initially, the developers had no intention of bringing back sunset weapons, and even reassured players that they would be able to dismantle the gear.

The developer emphasized that Destiny 2’s identity relies heavily on the ability to play with others, and the recent power changes have only enhanced this aspect. Kulinski reassured players that the team is committed to bringing back beloved weapons, much like the Brave Arsenal in the previous expansion, Into The Light.

Kulinski acknowledged the frustration players may have with the changes and clarified that they were not anticipated by the team. Nevertheless, they stand by their decision as they view it as necessary for the looter shooter’s transition into a new era.

“While these were not anticipated developments, we are confident that this decision will contribute to the ongoing success of Destiny in 2024 and beyond.”
