Debate Heats Up Over Destiny 3 as Community Voice Shifts

In a recent discussion, Gladd, a prominent content creator and top raider within the Destiny 2 community, has vocally criticized fans opposed to the idea of a sequel, suggesting their stance is detrimental to the potential for a “fresh start”for Bungie’s beleaguered looter-shooter franchise.

Gladd’s Dismissal of Fan Concerns

On January 5, 2025, Gladd took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to address a prevalent argument among players concerned that a new installment, such as Destiny 3, would disrupt their experience by nullifying their hard-earned gear. In his post, he stated:

The group of folks who say: “I won’t play a new Destiny game if I lose all my gear and have to start over fresh.”–You’re fighting to destroy the brightest light the franchise has a dream of – a fresh start. Also… fucking BULLLLLSHITTTT. You’ll drop D2 in a heartbeat. Stfu

Gladd expressed skepticism towards these concerns, arguing that players would abandon Destiny 2 swiftly if presented with a compelling new experience.

Destiny 2’s Declining Player Base

Despite achieving impressive player numbers following the release of the much-lauded expansion, The Final Shape, in June 2024, Destiny 2 has experienced a significant dip in its player population due to subsequent updates, notably the Episodes Echoes and Revenant. The lukewarm reception of these updates, coupled with recent layoffs at Bungie and a growing list of technical issues, has led many to believe that only a fresh sequel can rejuvenate the franchise.

Community Expectations and New Directions

Gladd further highlighted the community’s desire for innovative content by referencing the mobile spin-off, Destiny Rising. He remarked:

Obviously, not a direct 1:1 example, but close enough: Look at how many people jumped on Destiny Rising lmao. The community wants NEW SHIT. Now imagine if Destiny Rising was a full main game console/PC launch, with all resources thrown at it. I dunno.. call it Destiny 3?

His comments suggest a longing for new experiences within the franchise, underlining that a main console or PC title could harness the success of mobile titles to attract players back to a full-fledged experience.

Uncertain Future for Destiny 3

However, despite the community’s clamor for change, the likelihood of Destiny 3 being developed in the near future appears remote. Reports indicate that a sequel is not currently in the pipeline. As Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier pointed out in August 2024, “Destiny 3 was not canceled because it was never in development.”

As Destiny 2 continues to evolve, the debate surrounding the necessity and potential direction of a sequel remains a hot topic among its dedicated community.
