Despite its challenging nature, Trials of Osiris is a competitive PvP mode designed to push Destiny 2 players to their limits. However, the current state of the community shows a concerning trend as player counts are at an all-time low, with many avoiding the mode altogether.
During the weekend of August 20, Trials of Osiris had a participation of only 109,449 players, according to data from Trials Report. This marks an 8% decrease from the previous week and is also the lowest number of players in the playlist in the past three years.
Since August 2021, the number of players queuing into Trials has steadily increased. However, this past weekend saw a significant decline in the playlist’s population, reaching the lowest point since then. This suggests that even frequent Trials players are not currently engaging with it.
It is probable that this is a result of several smaller factors instead of one major issue. Throughout The Final Shape, the community has voiced their concerns about various aspects. Some of the most common complaints have been regarding Fireteam Matchmaking, frustrations with the meta, and instances of cheating.
Trials of Osiris’ last weekend saw a decline in players, matches, kills, and flawless completions.
Similarly, casual players who are solely focused on acquiring powerful weapons have no incentive to participate in Trials this season. With the release of the latest expansion, only one new weapon, Aisha’s Care, has been introduced to the loot pool.
Three additional weapons were redistributed, but this has not been sufficient in attracting participants. This shortage of loot poses a significant issue, especially since Echoes did not introduce any fresh armor sets to Trials, meaning that there are no obtainable cosmetic items either.
Despite Trials of Osiris being the main concern, Destiny has also seen a decline in its overall player base. According to Steamcharts, the number of players for the looter shooter has decreased significantly with an average of only 42,343 Steam users in the past 30 days, showing a 32% decrease from July and a 65% decrease from June.
Despite the anticipated decline in the months following the release of a major expansion, it is typically expected that players will eventually return in a live service game such as Destiny 2. Unfortunately, this is not currently the case as the game’s population continues to decrease week after week.
It is hoped that the upcoming content for Echoes Act 3 will entice players to once again log on, as the next Exotic Mission is said to be the largest one yet from Bungie. This highly-anticipated mission will also bring an end to the current seasonal storyline, making it an essential experience for those interested in the game’s lore.
