On Sunday, November 3, 2024, Kadokawa unveiled an exciting new promotional video for the upcoming anime series Detectives These Days Are Crazy!. This reveal introduced a fresh cast member and showcased a humorous Japanese language pun, albeit without revealing any actual footage from the series.
New Characters and Talented Voice Acting
The promotional material highlighted newly announced characters who are central to this language-based joke. Notably, all three new characters will be voiced by the talented Tomokazu Sugita, recognized for his iconic roles as Gintoki Sakata from Gintama, Gyomei Himejima in Demon Slayer, and Joseph Joestar in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
The Language Joke Behind the Video
The theme of the promotional video revolves around “Li Ossan no Hi,” translating to “Good Middle-Aged Man Day.” This clever pun corresponds to the date November 3, since the number 11 can resemble “li” and “03” can be pronounced as “oh” and “san.”
Meet the New Characters
The anime introduces three intriguing characters: Nipple-Tasting Man, Cross Chest Hair Man, and Man Who Likes Ropes—all officially listed on the anime’s website. Sugita brings these characters to life in the promotional video, showcasing his diverse vocal talents.
The accompanying visuals depict these four characters striking muscle-flexing poses alongside the main protagonist, Keiichiro Nagumo. The text at the base of the visual reads, “The Big Four of Yabee Ojisan,” emphasizing their newfound prominence in the series.
Meet the Voice Cast
Protagonist Keiichiro Nagumo will be voiced by Junichi Suwabe , with additional notable cast members including Kana Hanazawa as Mashiro, Tomohiro Yamaguchi as Yu Asunaro, and Aya Hirano as Hana Kazamaki. Directed by Rion Kujo , the series is currently slated for a general release in 2025, although details regarding the animation studio and other staff have yet to be revealed.
Adaptation of a Popular Manga
Detectives These Days Are Crazy! will adapt the ongoing manga by Masakuni Igarashi, which began serialization in April 2016 in ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Maoh magazine. One Peace Books is set to publish the first of the 15 manga volumes in English on April 28, 2025. The manga’s storyline introduces us to Keiichiro Nagumo, previously a celebrated detective, who has now become a quintessential middle-aged man out of touch with modern technology, including smartphones. His life takes a turn when a high school girl named Mashiro arrives, eager to become his assistant, setting the stage for a comically mismatched detective duo.
“Behold, a great detective who thrills the world solving impossible cases in no time! His name? Keiichiro Nagumo. …But all of that was over a decade ago. Now he’s just your typical middle-aged dude. Nagumo is behind the times to the point that he doesn’t even know what a smartphone is. But out of the blue, he is confronted by a high school girl named Mashiro who shows up wanting to be his assistant. Witness the miracles a gender-gap detective duo can make!”
