In a recent interview with IGN, Rod Fergusson, the head of Diablo 4, humorously admitted to having romanced every character in the Dragon Age series. He even made light of his romantic adventures coinciding with the launch of The Veilguard.
Fergusson is a prominent figure in the gaming world, having been instrumental in developing the Gears of War franchise. With years dedicated to creating engaging storylines and exhilarating gameplay, he now leads Diablo 4, a title that has successfully captured the attention of gamers and streamers following a year of updates post-launch.
The release of The Veilguard today highlights Fergusson’s fondness for Dragon Age. Although he’s not directly involved in the development of Veilguard, he wasn’t shy about expressing his favorites.
During the interview, he candidly shared, “I think I’ve slept with all of the Dragon Age characters,” bringing laughter to the conversation.
Listen to his stories starting at the 40:10 mark.
When asked about his preferred romance arcs, Fergusson joked about his varied encounters, citing a “halfling thief” from Dragon Age: Origins (Zevran) and a “French diplomat” from Dragon Age Inquisition (Josephine).
He recounted a funny story regarding his attempts to woo Josephine from Inquisition. “I’m quite goal-oriented when I game,” he said, expressing his ambition to win her affection. “I resolved to make her mine.”
He explored every possibility, trying all approaches he could think of. However, when he finally confirmed his feelings, he faced the disappointing realization that he had landed in the friend zone. “After the shoe conversation, there’s no going back,” he lamented.
Fergusson also shared a nostalgic moment from Origins, recalling how a thief unexpectedly captured his interest. “There was this halfling thief who was charming me,” he reminisced, remembering one dialogue choice: “I like your hair or something.”
To his surprise, Zevran flirtatiously invited him, saying, “Would you like to come into my tent?” Rod found himself chuckling at his own response: “I mean, yeah. I guess so.” He became engrossed in the game’s romantic entanglements.
Fergusson’s humorous take on his gaming experiences added an extra layer of enjoyment to the launch of The Veilguard. While these aren’t the characters from the new title, it offers a wonderful chance to reflect on the unforgettable moments from both Dragon Age adventures. Who knows? We might see romance elements begin to emerge in Sanctuary as well.
