Diablo 4 Expansion: Which Character Class Will Arrive Next as DLC?

It is highly unlikely that the character classes available at the launch of Diablo 4 will be the only ones in the game. We can expect additional classes to be introduced through updates and DLC. The real question is, which Diablo classes will be included in the expansion of Diablo 4?

Despite confirmation from Blizzard about upcoming expansions for Diablo 4, details about the content have yet to be revealed. Despite the efforts of dataminers, the storyline remains a mystery, although it is expected to pick up where Diablo 4 left off and potentially bring back the Prime Evils. However, it is uncertain if Blizzard will introduce new character classes in the DLC for Diablo 4.

The uplifting update is that Diablo 4, the largest installment in the series, typically introduces a minimum of two fresh classes through new DLC. The real question is, which classes will be added? Interestingly, Diablo 4 has solely utilized returning classes, some of which have not been playable since the very first Diablo. This sets it apart as the first Diablo game to not introduce any entirely new classes, unlike Diablo 2, 3, and even Immortal before it.

We are certain that Diablo 4 will introduce additional character classes, although the specific ones have not been announced. The initial expansion, Vessel of Hatred, will include the first new class. Based on evidence, we can make educated guesses about potential new classes. Furthermore, we can eliminate some of the potential contenders listed below.

Warrior

Blizzard Entertainment

The Diablo 1 Warrior later becomes the Dark Wanderer.

In the original Diablo, the Warrior was the primary melee class, in contrast to the more rogue and magic-based classes that were also available. However, the Warrior class has since been diminished in both lore and gameplay. Other classes such as the Barbarian, Paladin, and Crusader have taken its place, rendering the Warrior somewhat obsolete. In terms of lore, the Warrior of Diablo 1 was known as Prince Aiden of Tristram, who eventually became the Dark Wanderer and, ultimately, a vessel for Diablo’s resurrection in the sequel.

Wizard

The Wizard is a lot like the Sorcerer.

(Diablo 3, Immortal) It is unlikely for the Wizard to make a comeback in any potential Diablo 4 DLC, as it shares too many similarities with the Sorcerer class. Both classes utilize elemental magic to inflict damage upon their foes. The Wizard was first introduced in Diablo 3 and was also featured in Diablo Immortal, taking the place of the Sorcerer and Sorceress from the previous Diablo games. Though the Wizard and Sorcerer are technically different classes, originating from different elemental magic schools in Sanctuary, their similarities make it unsuitable for them to coexist in the same game.

The Bard

Blizzard Entertainment

Diablo Hellfire was an unofficial expansion.

The Bard was a character class that was introduced in the unofficial Hellfire Expansion for Diablo 1. Since this content was not officially sanctioned by Blizzard, the Bard’s canonical status is questionable. However, the Barbarian, another character from Hellfire, was officially introduced in Diablo 2 and has since been featured in Diablo 3, Immortal, and 4. While anything is possible, it is highly unlikely that the Bard will be added as a character class in future Diablo 4 DLC. Additionally, the Bard’s character models were simply recycled from the Rogue, making them even less appealing.

Amazon

Diablo 2 Resurrected Amazon
Blizzard Entertainment

The Amazon is a master of spears and bows.

In Diablo 2, Amazons are skilled female fighters proficient in using bows, javelins, and spears. They took over the role of the Rogue class, but surprisingly, formed an alliance with the Rogue Order of the Sightless Eye in the first Act of the game. With the option for players to choose their character’s gender in current Diablo games, playing as a male Amazon would present difficulties as it may overlap with the Barbarian class. Additionally, the Rogue class in Diablo 4 utilizes similar combat techniques and abilities as the Amazon, making it unlikely for the Amazon class to make a comeback.

Assassin

Blizzard Entertainment

The Assassin only ever appeared in the Diablo 2 expansion.

(Diablo 2) The Assassins are skilled in martial arts and utilize their claw weapons to effortlessly defeat their enemies. While they were first introduced in the Diablo 2 expansion, The Lord of Destruction, the Assassin we control had previously appeared as an NPC. This character was initially inspired by the Rogue class and was eventually replaced by the Demon Hunter in Diablo 3. Considering the Rogue’s return in Diablo 4, it is unlikely that the Assassin will make a comeback.

Demon Hunter

Demon Hunter Diablo Immortal
Blizzard Entertainment

The Demon Hunter was a fan favorite in Diablo 3 and Immortal.

(Diablo 3, Immortal) The Demon Hunter class is proficient in dual-wielding crossbows, utilizing explosives, setting traps, and harnessing the power of shadow magic. It was created as a hybrid of the Assassin and Amazon classes, effectively replacing both. This class was highly favored in both Diablo 3 and Immortal, and although the Rogue now fulfills a similar role in Diablo 4, there is still a possibility for the Demon Hunter to make a comeback.

Witch Doctor

Witcher Doctor Diablo
Blizzard Entertainment

The Witcher Doctor is one of the missing classes not available at Diablo 4’s launch.

Witch Doctors in Diablo 3 utilize Voodoo to summon spirits and undead minions to fight against enemies. They were introduced as a substitute for the Necromancer class, but did not gain as much popularity. As a result, the Necromancer was eventually added as downloadable content to Diablo 3 due to high demand from players.

Despite the Necromancer’s return in Diablo 4, there is still potential for the Witch Doctor to make an appearance. After all, both Nephalem coexisted in Diablo 3, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Additionally, the datamined files for the upcoming expansion have revealed the presence of their home region, Kurast, which could indicate their involvement.

Monk

Diablo 3 monk
Blizzard Entertainment

The Monk topped many tier lists.

(Diablo 3, Immortal) Moving on to the character classes that are highly probable to be included in Diablo 4 DLC, we have the Monk. Known for their discipline and agility, Monks are skilled fighters who excel in both offense and defense, making them a versatile choice for hand-to-hand combat. They have even adopted some techniques and equipment from the Assassin class. Monks were a popular choice in both Diablo 3 and Immortal, often ranking high on tier lists for both PvP and PvE. With no equivalent class currently in Diablo 4, they would be an easy addition as DLC.

Paladin

Diablo 2 Paladin
Blizzard Entertainment

The Paladin was a Holy Warrior in Diablo 2.

The Paladin, a melee-oriented warrior in Diablo 2, utilized auras and holy magic to enhance their power and weaken enemies. This class was often seen as a replacement for the heavily armored Warrior, but their devotion to the holy light made them a formidable force. With the emergence of the Inarius religion in Diablo 3, the Paladin would fit seamlessly into the world of Diablo 4. Despite being replaced by the Crusader in Diablo 3 and Immortal, it may be worth revisiting the Paladin order.

Crusader

Diablo 3 Crusader female
Blizzard

The Crusader is a classic tank in Diablo 3.

(Diablo 3, Immortal) In the games Diablo 3 and Immortal, the Crusader class is similar to the Paladin class. They are a combination of a caster and a tank, utilizing heavy armor and wielding a flail, sword, and a great shield. However, their greatest weapon is their righteousness, using it and their unwavering determination to vanquish both heretics and demons. It is highly likely that one of these two classes will make a return in the upcoming Diablo 4 DLC. The only question that remains is which one will it be – the Crusader or the Paladin?

Blood Knight

Diablo Immortal blood knight class
Blizzard Entertainment

The Blood Knight is the first new class since Diablo 3 DLC.

The Blood Knight is a vampiric class currently only available in Diablo Immortal, although this may change in the future. This marks the first addition of a new class to the Diablo series since the Crusader was introduced in the Diablo 3 DLC in 2014. Blizzard introduced the Blood Knight in Diablo Immortal just a few weeks after the release of Diablo 4.

Hence, it can be assumed that the developers have taken into account the option of incorporating this vampire-fighting warrior into the newest installment. Although it would fall under the category of a returning class, it would bring a fresh element that was absent in Diablo 1, 2, and 3. It is hoped that Blizzard has grand designs for The Blood Knight – not just limited to Diablo Immortal.

As Season 2 of Diablo 4 will feature vampires and potentially pair our player with a companion who hunts vampires, it is possible that Blizzard is preparing the game for the future introduction of the Blood Knight through DLC. While this is not confirmed, it is likely that the developers have plans for the class beyond just Diablo Immortal.

Despite initially claiming that the Blood Knight class in Immortal and the vampire-themed DLC of Season 2 were unrelated, at Blizzcon, developer Adam Jackson stated that he sees no obstacle in potentially introducing the Blood Knights to Diablo 4 in the future (as originally reported by Yahoo! News).

This suggests that the developers of Diablo 4 are receptive to the concept, and it is possible that the Blood Knight will eventually make an appearance in the game. Considering that the developers typically introduce at least one new character class with each expansion, it is likely that we will see several new classes added before Blizzard eventually ends support or releases a sequel.

A New Character Class

Despite every Diablo game introducing new character classes, Diablo 4 has yet to follow suit. Both Diablo 2 and 3 featured multiple new classes, some of which were merely variations or influenced by existing ones. Though fans of Diablo 4 may be anticipating the return of familiar classes, there is also the potential for a completely new class in future expansions.

During an interview with Polygon at BlizzCon 2023, the developers hinted that the upcoming character class will be entirely new. They expressed their enthusiasm for introducing fresh elements to the Diablo series, stating that it is high time to bring unprecedented features to the game.

In the upcoming Diablo 4 DLC, new classes from familiar factions such as the Templar, Scoundrel, and Enchantress could potentially be added for players to experience. There is also the possibility of playing as an Angel or Demon for the first time, given the ever-changing alliances between Heaven and Hell. Despite these potential additions, it is certain that the current character classes in Diablo 4 are only the start of what is to come.
