Diablo 4: Potential Return of Diablo in Future Expansion Teased by Developers

Diablo, also known as the Lord of Terror, has long been established as the primary antagonist in the Diablo franchise. His eventual appearance in Diablo 4 is highly anticipated by both fans and developers alike.

Despite being defeated in the first three Diablo games, Diablo remains the main antagonist. Despite being replaced by other villains in the expansions of each game, his presence continues to cast a looming shadow over Sanctuary. It’s worth noting that the game is named after him. Additionally, he is considered the equivalent of Satan in the Diablo universe.

In contrast, Diablo 4 introduced Lilith as the primary antagonist, a multifaceted and relatable villain who was determined to defend Sanctuary from Diablo and his Prime Evil siblings. However, Lilith’s status as a demon posed a challenge, as her strategy for safeguarding the world demanded that humanity submit to her rule. Although a world under Lilith’s control would be preferable to one ruled by Diablo, it still fell short of perfection.

Diablo’s image looms large over Lilith.

After Lilith’s defeat in Diablo 4, the protagonists unknowingly paved the way for Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and Diablo’s brother, to make a comeback. This could potentially result in the return of both Baal and Diablo. Despite being absent in the fourth installment, Diablo’s potential return is hinted at through the stained glass window showing him looming over Lilith as she meets her demise.

During her appearance at Gamescom 2024, Tiffany K. Watt, the Production Director for Diablo 4, shared her excitement for the franchise’s return. She expressed her enthusiasm for the chance to delve into various aspects of Sanctuary’s lore and explore different approaches to the Prime Evils. The beloved franchise offers endless possibilities for exploration.

“The return of the Prime Evils is inevitable, no matter the circumstances. Therefore, our focus in this game is to delve into the various ways in which their comeback will occur. We have the creative freedom to shape this canvas, and I am hopeful that we can further enhance it while remaining connected to the Prime Evils.”

Since the initial release of Diablo 4, fans have been speculating about the possible return of Diablo. Watt’s recent comments could be interpreted as confirmation, and after Mephisto has had his moment in Vessel of Hatred, it appears that the inevitable return of the Lord of Terror is on the horizon.
