Diablo 4 Season 6 will require players to start anew with a different character; however, your prior achievements won’t entirely disappear. Here’s a breakdown of what carries over into Season 6 from previous adventures.
The game structure allows certain tasks to be completed once, with your progress transferring over to the next season. This means players who have achieved specific objectives will face less grinding when engaging with the new wave of seasonal content.
Below, we detail exactly what aspects carry over into Diablo 4 Season 6, what does not, and how the process functions. Additionally, we will provide some helpful tips to enhance your gameplay experience in future seasons of Blizzard’s latest hack-and-slash looter. The good news is that it’s much simpler than you may think.

How Does a New Season Begin?
When you create a seasonal character in Diablo 4, you’ll need to start fresh, as characters from previous seasons or any eternal characters (non-seasonal) cannot be utilized.
If you’ve already navigated the campaign with a prior character, whether seasonal or eternal, you will have the option to skip the campaign. Doing so will automatically unlock all endgame content, including capstone dungeons, the Tree of Whispers, your mount, and Helltide events—essentially, everything that becomes available after defeating Lilith and watching the credits roll.
However, all the side quests in the game will remain accessible to you (even if previously completed), as well as other side events unrelated to the main narrative, such as unlocking strongholds and Aspects.
You’ll start as a brand new character and will need to level up to 50 without the benefits of the campaign; however, there’s plenty of content to keep you engaged, including the Seasonal Journey.
You can delve into the new seasonal content right after you defeat the campaign, when a new story begins, or upon skipping it, but not prior.

What Carries Over from Previous Characters?
When beginning a new season, you won’t need to start entirely from scratch. All the Renown you’ve accumulated so far in Diablo 4 is attached to your Blizzard profile, not your specific character, which means this will transfer over to the upcoming season.
For instance, if you completed all Renown Challenges in a past season or with a character from the original launch before the introduction of seasons, all rewards will be reflected when you start a new seasonal character. You’ll also receive all rewards again, which includes the 10 level boosts, gold, Obols, and more—providing a solid start to your new character.
To clarify, this applies only to Renown-based rewards applicable to all characters; some rewards are specific to individual characters, so this distinction becomes clear as you begin.
If you’ve only gathered some Renown rewards, that’s what you will receive when starting a new seasonal character. Your progress on each tier will also carry over, making it a snapshot of your advancements. You may choose to start amassing Renown with one character, then finalize it with another, but this might complicate matters unless you have a clear strategy in mind—which we’ll elaborate on below.
Your map progress will also transfer to your new seasonal character, including all areas you’ve explored, waypoints you’ve unlocked, and Altars of Lilith you’ve activated. This will also contribute to your overall Renown, as the map from your main playthrough—representing your most progress—will be copied to your new seasonal character.
Keep in mind, every Altar of Lilith provides all your characters with a permanent stat boost and requires only one activation. So, if you’ve activated all Altars, every new seasonal (or eternal) character you create will start with a significant stat boost, in addition to the 10 extra levels granted by Renown.
This is a fantastic way to kickstart your new adventure. While activating every Altar of Lilith can be time-consuming and may take a few hours, the benefits are worthwhile. This acceleration makes grinding for levels easier, enabling you to tackle harder difficulties much sooner, which is crucial for true endgame content.
Some waypoints will remain locked until you activate your first one, unlocking most others subsequently, while others will become available once the connected Stronghold is cleared, meaning you only need to unlock waypoints connected to side missions.
Even if you’ve completed the campaign but overlooked some areas or waypoints, this map setup will be how your journey resumes in your next playthrough. All dungeons, quests, and NPCs will reset, so think of it as a new adventure with your existing map. As an added advantage, you’ll have visibility on the waypoints you initially missed.
Season 6 will directly connect with the Vessel of Hatred.
When Should I Start a New Season of Diablo 4?
Your answer to this question primarily depends on your personal circumstances. If this is your first experience with Diablo 4, we suggest diving directly into the current season to take full advantage of the rewards that seasonal play affords. You’ll level up faster, encounter more players, utilize exciting new powers, and engage with the new quests.
Additionally, you’ll have the unique opportunity to enjoy the campaign for the first time with many of these perks activated, even though some only kick in once the campaign is completed. If this is your initial playthrough of the campaign, you are certainly in for a delightful experience.
If you previously played an earlier season or began your main journey at launch before seasons rolled out, your decision will largely hinge on your current character’s progression level. If you’ve only just started, it might make sense to reset.
However, if you are midway through the campaign, we advise completing it so you’ll have the option to skip on your next seasonal character. This will save you significant time. This way, all endgame content will be unlocked, and you will also carry over your Renown and map progress.
In doing so, you’ll commence your new game with everything necessary to immerse yourself in the seasonal excitement. If you’re eager to jump into Season 6 but already possess a well-developed existing character, you could achieve all the Normal and Veteran Renown tiers, explore the map, complete the campaign, and then initiate Season 6. This will allow you to quickly escalate to Nightmare difficulty and unlock further content with your second character, saving you time as you venture into the new season swiftly.
Having unlocked everything plus the seasonal rewards will enable you to reach level 50 promptly, allowing you to seamlessly continue from where your previous character left off. By the next season’s arrival, you’ll likely have all unlocked and can simply savor the latest content introduced each season. You can then select your favorite characters to tackle the Vessel of Hatred DLC and the new character class.
