The Necromancer class has undergone significant evolution in Diablo 4, transforming from the series’ underdog to a formidable force embodying death itself. As a devoted fan of Diablo 2—widely regarded as the pinnacle of the franchise—I have always been captivated by the allure of the Necromancer. The thrill of summoning skeletal warriors and golems to carry out my bidding, while I reveled in the chaos, has remained a source of enjoyment for over twenty years.
Adding to the Necromancer’s mystique is the character’s uniquely gothic flair. From a narrative standpoint, other heroes would likely be skeptical of having a corpse-reviving priest in their ranks. Yet when demonic armies threaten to overrun the world, having that unconventional ally suddenly appears advantageous. In any other setting, the Necromancer would typically be cast as the antagonist, making their inclusion in the hero lineup particularly intriguing.

Struggles at Endgame
Historically, the Necromancer faced challenges in the endgame as its reliance on minions rendered it less effective. On Hell difficulty, enemy forces could easily overwhelm summons, undermining their utility. While Diablo 2: Resurrected has since strengthened the Necromancer’s minions for late-game content, the original had rendered them nearly ineffective beyond a certain point.
I recall LAN parties where a Barbarian player would ask, “Why is the Necromancer so slow?” while he effortlessly trampled demons with his mighty maul. PvP encounters were even more disheartening, with my minions falling like dominoes, leaving my Necromancer vulnerable. Though minion builds have typically excelled in PvE environments, they often struggle in player versus player scenarios, particularly against stronger classes.
The Necromancer was introduced to Diablo 3 as downloadable content, but even then, it felt overshadowed by classes such as the Witch Doctor. Players often found the latter more effective in both endgame content and PvP settings, particularly against the Barbarian, Demon Hunter, and Sorcerer.
Approaching Diablo 4, I braced myself for the same fate. I anticipated having fun with the Necromancer but feared I would need to switch to another class for serious gameplay. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

Mastering Death
In Diablo 4, class effectiveness morphs with new seasons, and the Necromancer has fluctuated from top-tier to bottom-tier status. However, it has commonly maintained a dominant presence, especially with builds that emphasize specific playstyles.
While the minion build remains less suited for PvP—due to their fragility when faced with enemy players—there’s no denying minions have excelled in endgame, even emerging as top-tier builds in certain seasons. Finally, the game fulfills a twenty-year-old fantasy, allowing players to amass a powerful undead army and wreak havoc upon the forces of Hell. Each vanquished enemy has the potential to become a new thrall in your dark dominion, further amplifying your power as the army grows.
Although the Druid class also commands a selection of minions, the Necromancer stands out with the sensation of controlling a vast, cohesive horde of the undead, made fully formidable and under your complete command.

A New Era of Builds
Unlike previous iterations of Diablo where minion-dependent builds dominated, Diablo 4 offers the option to forgo summoning entirely. By sacrificing minions, players can gain significant buffs and invest skill points in alternative powers like shadow, bone, and blood magic, effectively crafting a solitary but terrifying Grim Reaper-like character.
This change introduces diverse builds and gameplay styles, making the Necromancer an intriguing choice for all types of players. Not everyone resonates with a minion-centric style; however, becoming a powerful solo combatant capable of rivaling melee classes in PvP presents a fresh and appealing option.
Today, the Necromancer is much more than a niche class for alternative players; they have truly claimed the title of masters over death. Even in the face of powerful foes like the Spiritborn in Season 7, they continue to demonstrate their strength and resilience.
