The upcoming Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 will fulfill players’ wishes by introducing a new item that can rescue damaged equipment.
Players have a lot to be excited about with Diablo 4’s Vessel of Hatred expansion. The downloadable content will bring a new campaign, the option to hire mercenaries, and the formidable-looking Spiritborn class.
Thanks to Blizzard’s slot at Xbox’s Gamescom 2024 stream, we now have even more to anticipate. Not only will Diablo 4 finally have a party finder, but the Scroll of Retempering will also be introduced with the Vessel of Hatred.
The Scroll of Retempering, as revealed by Blizzard’s team during the Xbox Gamescom 2024 stream, is specifically created to rescue any equipment that may have been rendered unusable during the Tempering procedure.
Diablo 4 players can find Scrolls of Retempering in the Dark Citadel’s weekly caches.
The new co-op-centric Dark Citadel activity first announced the item as a reward. Lead Game Designer Rex Dickson clarified that the scroll would prevent items from becoming unusable and instead grant them new Tempering charges.
For those fortunate enough to be unfamiliar with the term, bricking occurs when a piece of equipment becomes unusable due to subpar Tempering. If the incorrect attributes are enhanced during Tempering, it can affect the gear’s suitability for endgame purposes.
The issue of players risking rare gear with multiple Greater Affixes only to end up with a useless item has been a major concern. However, with the introduction of the Vessel of Hatred in Diablo 4, players will have another opportunity to salvage their gear and hopefully lessen the disappointment.
Rest assured that if you do not intend to purchase the expansion immediately, there is no need to worry. In a recent announcement, Community Manager Adam Fletcher provided further explanation on the Scroll of Retempering, assuring players that it will also be accessible in the base game.
Some additional info as I’ve seen questions regarding the Scrolls or Retempering1) These are one time use and can’t be used more than once on any given item. 2) These will be available in the base game as well. 3) And yes this means you have a small chance of finding these as…

According to Fletcher, Scrolls of Retempering are not commonly found in Diablo 4’s different activities. However, Lead Game Designer Rex Dickson clarified that the Dark Citadel remains the most favorable location to obtain one.
