The developers of Diablo 4 have announced that they will continue to provide support for the Eternal Realm by releasing new story content in upcoming seasons.
Despite the common belief that the Eternal Realm of Diablo 4 is simply a place for retired seasonal characters, it is actually home to many dedicated players who have formed strong connections with their carefully crafted characters. These players often continue to utilize their characters for various tasks and adventures in Sanctuary, even after a season has ended.
Some players prefer to treat the ARPG like World of Warcraft or Destiny, choosing to stick with one or a few characters and continue their story each season rather than starting over. This may be due to time constraints or personal preference.
Despite the addition of new features, the Eternal Realm had not received any new story content until Season 5, leaving it to essentially function as a resting place for old characters.
New story content could bring lapsed players back to Diablo 4.
The introduction of Season 5 brought a fresh storyline to the Eternal Realm and Seasonal Realms, which served as a precursor to the Vessel of Hatred DLC. The developers have now confirmed that this trend will continue in future seasons.
At the 2024 Gamescom event, Lead Designer Rex Dickson and Production Director Tiffany K. Watt announced that the Diablo team is fully aware of Seasonal and Eternal Realm and intends to provide support for both.
“According to them, there are two categories of players and we are catering to both. Eternal players typically prefer to remain loyal to their invested character, whereas Seasonal players are accustomed to creating a new character each season. Eternal players place a high value on the story, while seasonal players strive to reach the level cap.”
Dickson was asked about the nature of future season updates in relation to the overall storyline of Diablo 4. He acknowledged that Season 5 served to set up the expansion and that Season 6 will also introduce new content. However, he also confirmed that fans can expect more self-contained stories in the future.
Lastly, we inquired about the potential addition of older stories and features from Seasons 1-4 to the Eternal Realm. Their response was, “We will try to incorporate them if they are well-received by players and proven to be successful. We highly value our players’ opinions and take their feedback into consideration. If a certain aspect is not well-liked, we will adapt accordingly.”
The first major story expansion for Diablo 4, Vessel of Hatred, is set to be released on October 8, 2024.
