Did NewJeans’ Underwhelming Performance Shield LE SSERAFIM from Backlash?

Recently, NewJeans made a notable appearance at the 2024 The Fact Music Awards (TMA 2024) in Japan, receiving the esteemed Bonsang Artist of the Year award. Besides attending the ceremony, this girl group from ADOR showcased a mashup performance featuring 7 songs, including five chart-toppers: “ETA,” “OMG,” “Ditto,” “Hype Boy,” and “Attention,” along with their latest releases “Bubble Gum” and “How Sweet.” Furthermore, the members enjoyed solo performances where they shone in the spotlight.

Over the past two years, NewJeans has consistently invested significant effort into their award show stages, revitalizing each performance with new music arrangements and unique choreography.

However, NewJeans has recently been embroiled in the ongoing dispute between HYBE and their creative mind, Min Hee Jin, resulting in public controversies and speculation regarding their potential abandonment by their parent company. Hence, their participation at TMA 2024 carried substantial significance for fans.

The solo performance by Haerin at TMA 2024 ignited considerable controversy.

Despite the excitement, NewJeans’ performance at TMA faced significant backlash, especially during the solo parts. A video featuring Haerin’s solo dance and singing performance of “Attention” drew widespread criticism, with viewers noting instances where she appeared out of breath, off-key, and lacking in expressiveness.

Moreover, the group’s performances of “Bubble Gum” and “How Sweet” were criticized for their lengthy dance breaks, during which the members seemed to perform with minimal vocalization. Some netizens deemed the entire performance “disastrous,” putting Haerin’s live singing under particularly intense scrutiny.

NewJeans’ performances of “Bubble Gum” and “How Sweet” faced criticism.

Several netizens have claimed that, in comparison to other girl groups of this generation, NewJeans’ skills are “overrated.” This sentiment has led to comparisons with LE SSERAFIM, who previously faced their own scrutiny regarding vocal performance at Coachella.

Critics have pointed out that although LE SSERAFIM has faced criticism for their vocal abilities, their dance skills and stage presence have received high praise. Many argue that LE SSERAFIM’s performances create a visually captivating experience compared to NewJeans, who struggle with balancing lineup, complex choreography, and strong concepts since their debut.

As a result, a growing number of netizens feel that the recent shortcomings in NewJeans’ performances have inadvertently “saved” LE SSERAFIM from past criticisms.
