The closing scenes of Rings of Power Season 2 unfold in a valley “protected by the rings,”surrounded by lush greenery and cascading waterfalls. Could this be Rivendell? We might have an answer for you.
Eregion ultimately collapses in the Season 2 finale of Rings of Power. Adar’s Orcs invade the city, turning its rich history to ashes and its magnificent structures into ruins.
With Celebrimbor fallen and Galadriel incapacitated following her confrontation with Sauron, Gil-galad, Elrond, and Arondir must escape along with any remaining survivors. They venture into a northern valley, a serene retreat of natural beauty, hidden from the world—at least for now.
Luckily, the Elven rings provide protection, transforming it into a sanctuary for the Elves and others granted permission to remain. Even if you’re a casual fan of The Lord of the Rings, this place resembles Rivendell in virtually every way except its name – and you would be mostly correct.
Rings of Power is set to delve into the origins of Rivendell
When the Fellowship arrives at Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings films, it is a breathtaking marvel of Elven architecture, celebrated as one of the safest havens in Middle-earth.
According to Tolkien’s lore, Rivendell was established by Elrond following the siege of Eregion during the Second Age (specifically in 1697, though the timeline in Rings of Power is more intricate than that). It was also referred to as Imladris and the Last Homely House.
We also had a conversation with Robert Aramayo, who portrays Elrond in the series, asking whether they ultimately reach Rivendell. “Even if it were, I don’t think they’d realize it… lore-wise, it’s not a moment where they say, ‘Oh, we’ve arrived in this magical place,’”he clarified.
“It’s a strategic location that is beneficial to that moment. It eventually evolves into the Last Homely House and then Imladris. I think that even if they are where they could be, I’m not certain they would recognize that.”
We also discussed that surprising kiss between Elrond and Galadriel, which Aramayo mentioned left him “shocked.”
