The Mondrian Seoul Itaewon in Yongsan-gu, Seoul hosted the press conference for Netflix’s highly-anticipated original series “Goodbye Earth”on April 19th. The event was attended by director Kim Jin-min, Ahn Eun-jin, Jeon Sung-woo, and Kim Yoon-hye.
The story of D-200 in “Goodbye Earth”depicts the events leading up to an asteroid colliding with Earth, causing chaos and impending apocalypse for its inhabitants.
Director Kim Jin-man shared his thoughts on the drama, stating that he was immediately drawn to the unique premise of an apocalypse in the script. He reflected on how he would personally navigate such a situation and was intrigued by the idea of people choosing to not flee from danger. He also expressed his belief that true heroes are those who stay and fight alongside their fellow humans, rather than solely focusing on saving the planet. Each character’s story in the drama holds significance, value, and deserves admiration as it showcases the resilience and dignity of humanity. Despite their seemingly small roles, they are portrayed as heroes with immense courage and compassion.
In her role as middle school teacher Se-kyung in this drama, Ahn Eun-jin portrays a character who becomes fragile in her determination to protect her students. Despite acknowledging the concerns of those around her, Se-kyung remains steadfast in her mission to safeguard the children. She puts her whole heart into each decision she makes, even as she faces the end of the world. Witnessing the traumatic events unfold, Se-kyung feels a deep sense of duty and responsibility. The actress reflects that if any of us were in her shoes, we would likely make the same choice.
Director Kim showed his unwavering faith in Ahn Eun-jin when he revealed, “Upon receiving the script, I immediately thought of Ahn Eun-jin, even before she rose to fame. Despite the doubts of the producer and Netflix, I had already reached out to the CEO of Eun-jin’s agency and secured our partnership. Coincidentally, both Yoo Ah-in and Ahn Eun-jin are represented by the same agency. However, I made it clear that I was not interested in discussing Yoo Ah-in and insisted on working with Eun-jin. She was my top choice and my first preference.”
The release of “Goodbye Earth”was met with many obstacles, including the indictment of Yoo Ah-in, who played the role of researcher Yoon-sang and Se-kyung’s longtime boyfriend. He was charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act, causing delays and uncertainty for the project. Director Kim shared, “There was a long period where I thought the drama would never be released. Netflix gave me vague responses multiple times. But just when I had given up hope, they finally confirmed the release and I was overjoyed.”
Despite facing challenges due to Yoo Ah-in’s drug scandal, the director was determined to re-edit the drama. While initially considering skipping his role, the director ultimately decided to re-edit the first three episodes. However, due to restrictions from Netflix, the director was only able to make changes to the previous episodes and not the ones that had already been edited. Despite this setback, the director was able to find a way to make necessary changes to the show.
He explained, “I made sure to edit the drama in order for it to be successful. While I did attempt to decrease his on-screen presence to prevent any inconvenience for viewers, it was not possible to completely remove him as his character plays a crucial role in the main storyline. I hope the audience will not feel uneasy, and I ask for their understanding that I had to include the essential scenes to avoid any disruption to the main plot and other actors.”
Finally, director Kim stated, “It possesses philosophical elements, but does not pose a challenge to viewers.”
The premiere date for “Goodbye Earth”is set for April 26th.
