Director Remembers Yoo Ah-in’s Heartfelt Words at His Father’s Funeral: “I Committed a Crime Worthy of Death”

Director Kim Hyung-joo, recognized for his work on the anticipated film The Match, recently opened up about the ongoing drug scandal involving Yoo Ah-in during a candid interview.

On March 21, while at a café in Jongno, Seoul, Kim was inquired about his communication with Yoo Ah-in following the actor’s controversial allegations. He replied, “No, we haven’t been in touch. Neither of us is the type to maintain close contact.”

Reflecting on their last meeting, Kim recounted a poignant moment at Yoo Ah-in’s father’s funeral last year.“Given the circumstances, we couldn’t have a long conversation, ” Kim shared, recalling Yoo’s stark admission, “I’ve committed a crime that deserves death. I have nothing to say.”

When asked if Yoo had seen the final version of The Match, Kim clarified that the actor had only viewed an edited version of his scenes, missing the completed cut due to his overseas travels at the time of the winter 2022 staff screening.

In light of recent events, the release of The Match, initially set to debut on Netflix, has been indefinitely postponed due to the allegations against Yoo Ah-in. Following this setback, Netflix distanced itself from the project; however, distribution rights were subsequently secured by By4M Studio, which has announced a theatrical release date for April 26.

At a press screening for The Match on March 19 at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall, Kim acknowledged the implications of Yoo Ah-in’s legal troubles. He remarked, “When we cast him, it felt like I had the whole world. But in reality, there was a lot of pressure.” He expressed disappointment by stating, “As a lead actor, his actions were irresponsible. He is now facing the consequences of his mistakes as a member of society.”

The Match is inspired by the real-life stories of two iconic Go players, Cho Hun-hyun, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, and Lee Chang-ho, played by Yoo Ah-in. The film delves into their intricate mentor-student dynamic as well as their fierce rivalry, both of which significantly impacted the history of Korean Go.

Additionally, Lee Byung-hun also provided insight into his collaboration with Yoo Ah-in, commending the actor’s performance and character as quiet and dedicated while mentioning a lack of contact since the scandal arose.
