On June 3rd in the morning, Director Kim Tae-yong, the mastermind behind the film “Wonderland”, sat down with SPOTV News at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Seoul to delve into different facets of the movie.
Director Kim noted the strong chemistry between Suzy and Park Bo-gum, sparking rumors that they may be more than just co-stars. Despite the lack of intense drama in the script, the emotional tension remains high. The crucial factor is whether the characters can connect with a machine on an emotional level. When Suzy and Park Bo-gum first met, Director Kim advised them to form a deep bond, saying, “You two will have to become even closer than you expect.”
As a director, I was thrilled to see the chemistry between the two lead actors both on and off the screen. We extensively rehearsed the phone call scenes, as they required the actors to act while looking at a screen. Their dynamic, which shifted between that of friends and lovers, was evident during rehearsals and translated seamlessly onto film. For a director, capturing such natural interactions between actors is a joy, as it can be challenging when there is no chemistry. Fortunately, that was not the case with these two talented actors.
He remarked, “The presence of both of them was sufficient. They are both warm and genuine individuals, which contributed to the harmony in ‘Wonderland’. While the movie also features appearances from Jung Yu-mi, Choi Woo-sik, and Tang Wei, Suzy and Park Bo-gum only occupy about a third of the screen time. I was appreciative of the actors’ proactive approach to their characters.”
Upon being asked if the two were in fact dating, Director Kim responded with a smile, stating that their close relationship could possibly lead to such speculation. However, he also acknowledged that they may be deceiving him, but ultimately believed that they were simply close friends.
“Wonderland”tells a tale of reconnecting with a loved one who has passed away or is physically distant through a video call. The movie is scheduled to premiere on June 5th.
