During a September event featuring SEVENTEEN’s Jeonghan and The8, fortunate fans were offered an exclusive opportunity to meet the well-loved idols. A significant number of affluent supporters invested heavily for this memorable experience.
Unfortunately, the interaction with Jeonghan and The8 lasted a mere 9 minutes, and fans were disappointed by the absence of the promised special video. The format of the event limited visibility, contrasting sharply with the typical arrangement that allows high-paying attendees 30 minutes to an hour with the artists.
Many attendees spent around 63 million won (approximately $47,250 USD) just for a brief distant glimpse, which understandably frustrated fans, particularly due to Jeonghan’s impending enlistment. The two members seemed to struggle to connect with fans, exacerbating the disappointment.
For over a month, disgruntled fans have taken to social media to seek restitution. The organizing company has recognized its shortcomings and pledged to provide compensation; however, specific details are still pending. Fans feel deceived, and now with Jeonghan enlisted, rescheduling the event is not an option, leaving them to feel their financial contribution was squandered.
This situation underscores the unsettling aspects of idol culture, where exploitative practices by third parties can leave fans feeling cheated. Identifying who holds responsibility can often be a challenge, compounding the feelings of loss among supporters.
Meanwhile, SEVENTEEN continues to thrive as one of the most successful groups from the third generation, maintaining an impressive comeback rhythm and releasing their 12th mini album, “Spill The Feels.” In the first week alone, they sold 3.1 million copies, setting new K-pop sales records for the second consecutive year. Their dedicated fandom is a critical factor behind this remarkable achievement.
Furthermore, the group’s concerts are frequently sold out. In May 2024, SEVENTEEN captivated over 140,000 fans at Nissan Stadium in Japan. Their “Follow”tour across Asia grossed over 1 million USD, further explaining the lengths fans will go to for a chance to meet their idols.
