Discord is allegedly assigning gender to users with machine learning AI

According to users familiar with technology, there are claims that Discord utilizes machine learning to predict the gender and age range of its users.

X user @DiscordPreviews discovered evidence of Discord utilizing machine learning (ML), a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), to categorize users based on their gender and age. This information was obtained from Discord’s data packets and the user alleges that the company has been implementing this practice “since at least August 2022.”

“According to @DiscordPreviews, the ‘activity/analytics/events-[…].json’ file in certain Discord data packages contains the data. However, the specific criteria for accessing this data is unclear. Along with this information, they also provided a screenshot of a JSON file displaying the age and gender of an unspecified user. The user’s profile indicates that they are a male between the ages of 18 and 24.”

When creating a Discord account, it is not mandatory to include your gender or pronouns. However, you will be asked to provide your date of birth to ensure that you can only access servers that are appropriate for your age.

The reason behind Discord’s interest in predicting the gender of its users remains unclear. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal in April, Discord plans to introduce in-app advertisements to assist game developers. A request for comment from Discord has not yet been answered.

How to Find Your Discord Predicted Gender

Twitter user @bignutty_ recently shared a helpful guide for users to determine their assigned gender on Discord. This process involves downloading a data package, and according to Discord, it may take up to 30 days before the data can be accessed to verify the assigned information.

If you wish to conduct your own test, follow these steps:

  • Once you receive the data package Zip file, open it.
  • Go to activity then analytics
  • After opening the file, the code will display “predicted gender”.

Execute the FIND “predicted_gender” events-2024-00000-of-00001.json command if the file is too large to be opened in an editor.
