As TikTok’s presence in the United States hangs in the balance, a new contender emerges from its parent company ByteDance: Lemon8. However, users should proceed with caution, as the fate of this platform may also be uncertain.
TikTok enjoys immense popularity worldwide, yet its future in the U.S. is precarious. On April 2024, U.S. President Joe Biden enacted legislation mandating ByteDance to divest its shares in TikTok within a nine-month period, or face a ban.
Despite this ultimatum, ByteDance has been slow to respond, even indicating plans to shut down its operations if no agreement is reached by the deadline of January 19, 2025. This could result in TikTok’s removal from Google Play and Apple’s app stores.
As this deadline approaches, users are exploring alternatives like Lemon8, another ByteDance-owned platform, which is rapidly gaining traction.
Lemon8 experiences a surge in popularity as TikTok’s potential ban looms large.
Lemon8: The Rising Star Amid TikTok’s Uncertainty
Launched in the U.S. in 2023, Lemon8 initially saw a rapid influx of users. Today, it has solidified its status as one of the top free applications in Apple’s App Store as of January 13, 2025.
While some content creators endorse Lemon8 as a viable substitute for TikTok, users should note that Biden’s legislation encompasses any application owned by ByteDance, which includes Lemon8.
Moreover, Lemon8 isn’t the sole alternative gaining traction. As of mid-January, Rednote, also known as “China’s answer to Instagram,” has become the most downloaded app on the Apple App Store.
The uncertainties surrounding TikTok’s operations in the U.S. prompt many to seek alternatives as they prepare for a shift in the social media landscape.
