Discussion: Should Megumi be blamed for recent tragedies in Jujutsu Kaisen?

There has been a long-standing dislike among Jujutsu Kaisen fans towards Megumi, who is unable to break free from Sukuna’s control. However, is this hatred towards him justified?

Currently in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, the strongest sorcerers have joined forces to defeat Sukuna in an intense battle, with the exception of one. In Chapter 212, Sukuna forcefully takes control of Megumi’s body, plunging his soul into despair.

From the moment Sukuna spotted Megumi’s potential during the Juvenile Center mission, he had harbored a desire to make him his vessel. He was well aware that Megumi had the potential to become a cage for him, just like Yuji. Sukuna patiently bided his time, waiting for the opportune moment to take over and crush Megumi’s soul.

Despite causing controversy, Chapter 261 of Jujutsu Kaisen only further exacerbated the frustration of those who dislike Megumi due to the current events. However, this does not necessarily mean that Megumi is solely to blame in this situation.

What is the reason behind Jujutsu Kaisen fans blaming Megumi?

Despite the risks that Yuji and Yuta took during the fight to assist Megumi, he ultimately declined their offer to return with them. However, their actions had unforeseen consequences as beloved characters perished or sustained injuries. The sorcerers remain determined to eliminate Sukuna, but rescuing Megumi has become their top priority.

Yuta made the decision to shut down Jacob’s Ladder to prevent any harm to Megumi’s soul. Despite being struck within his own domain, Yuji was able to weaken Sukuna’s grip on Megumi’s soul through his powerful soul punches. However, Megumi ultimately rejected their assistance at a crucial moment. To make matters worse, the situation escalated after Megumi refused their aid.

After Yuta’s attempt to save Megumi is unsuccessful, he is fatally wounded and split in half. This results in the most dire consequence, with Rika barely managing to keep him conscious until he can possess Gojo’s body. However, Yuta’s ability to copy a technique is limited to five minutes, leaving his fate uncertain as he is unsure of the consequences once time runs out.

Despite Yuji’s unsuccessful efforts to rescue Megumi, Sukuna inflicted damage to his eye that has yet to fully heal. Yuji had to temporarily pause the battle, barely able to execute the Reverse Cursed Technique. During this brief intermission, Maki engaged in a solo confrontation with the enemy and was struck by two Black Flashes. Sukuna regained control and unleashed Divine Flames, resulting in the death of Choso.

Despite the risk to their lives, Todo and Mei Mei joined forces to save everyone. Chapter 261 now teases a second round between Sukuna and Yuta, as Yuta has taken over his late sensei’s body.

Is the criticism towards Megumi justified?

Despite the clear evidence that Megumi’s actions have indirectly resulted in the recent tragedies in Jujutsu Kaisen, he cannot be held solely accountable. Megumi’s sole purpose as a sorcerer has always been to protect Tsumiki, yet Sukuna manipulates Megumi’s abilities to bring about her demise.

Sukuna successfully performed the bath ritual to suppress Megumi’s soul, causing Megumi to be consumed with despair and unable to respond to Yuji’s call. Furthermore, in the battle between Gojo and Sukuna, Megumi’s soul endured significant harm as Sukuna deliberately redirected Gojo’s powerful attack onto Megumi’s soul.

Therefore, Megumi is not only mourning the loss of Tsumiki and Gojo, but he has also suffered significant injuries from his encounter with the most powerful sorcerer of the current era. Despite Yuji’s attempt to reach out and aid Megumi, they were unable to have a conversation and Yuji only caught a glimpse of him. It is uncertain whether Megumi was in a stable mental state to hear Yuji’s call.

Despite Megumi’s lack of cooperation with the sorcerers leading to numerous tragedies, it seems that he was incapable of responding. However, the sorcerers continue to make efforts to save him and are determined to defeat Sukuna.
