Disney Reinvents Classic Shia LaBeouf Film into Exciting New Series with a Unique Twist

Disney has officially announced the development of a new streaming series inspired by Shia LaBeouf’s acclaimed film, Holes. However, this adaptation will introduce a significant change from the original narrative.

Since its launch, Disney+ has consistently enriched its platform with a diverse array of original programming, enhancing the extensive existing catalog of the media powerhouse. While many of these new titles are rooted in established franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars or iconic animated classics, Disney has also been known to explore lesser-known properties for fresh material.

Recently, Disney has delved into its treasure trove of less-publicized titles, pulling out Holes—the 2003 film based on the beloved 1998 novel by Louis Sachar—for a fresh reinterpretation as a streaming series.

As first reported by Variety, Disney has officially greenlit a pilot episode for this new adaptation. Although the original story revolves around the character Stanley Yelnats—previously portrayed by Shia LaBeouf—this reinterpretation will feature a different protagonist.

Introducing a New Protagonist in the Holes Series

The official logline for the series reveals, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.” This shift indicates that the series will pivot from the narrative of Stanley Yelnats to focus on a female lead.

This alteration marks a notable departure from the original storyline, which unfolds at Camp Green Lake—a character-building boot camp designed for delinquent teenage boys. At this preliminary stage of development, it remains unclear whether other crucial characters, such as Hector Zeroni or Theodore ‘Armpit’ Johnson, will also undergo gender changes or if the camp environment will become coeducational.

The new Disney+ Original series will be produced under the guidance of Executive Producer Drew Goddard, known for his work on acclaimed projects like Cloverfield and The Martian. Goddard has expressed immense confidence in this revitalized approach to Holes and in the team’s dedication to honoring Sachar’s unique vision.

“They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit,” Goddard shared with Variety. “To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.”
