The inclusion of Deadpool and Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has sparked discussion about how the infamous Merc with a Mouth is aware of the Avengers and their existence within his own universe.
Both Deadpool and Wolverine belong to a select group of characters who were brought over from 20th Century Fox to Disney during the company’s acquisition, and have now been integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s films.
Despite this, it should not be assumed that the X-Men have been present throughout the entire MCU timeline. The X-Men universe remains distinct from the MCU, similar to how Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films exist in a separate continuity.
However, Deadpool stands out as being unique. He has the ability to mention Spidey, Batman, and actual individuals and occurrences without facing any repercussions or significance. This can prove to be perplexing, particularly if you’re attempting to determine which universe he actually belongs to.
How Deadpool Discovered the Avengers
Although Deadpool is a character in the MCU, he does not interact with the Avengers as they exist in separate universes within the multiverse.
At Avengers HQ, six years before the main events of the film, Deadpool is interviewed by Happy Hogan (Tony Stark is still alive, but he is not interested in taking “entry-level”meetings).
Despite his usual asinine yammering, Wade admits that he desires to use his abilities for good. He acknowledges the importance of their actions and how it impacts the world. However, Happy reminds him that he is not the type to save the world and suggests that he should instead find his purpose.
One crucial piece of information to note is that while the Avengers reside in Earth-616, Deadpool hails from Earth-10005, otherwise known as the Fox universe. However, Wade managed to journey there with the help of Cable’s device in Deadpool 2, meaning there is no existing incarnation of the Avengers in his own universe.
Across the multiverse, there exist various versions of the Avengers, except in Deadpool’s universe. For instance, the recently introduced Wolverine has been quoted as saying, “screw the Avengers,”but no further information is available.
Will Deadpool Join the Avengers?
Technically speaking, it is uncertain if Deadpool will become a member of the Avengers. However, it is unlikely that Marvel would pass up the opportunity for a collaboration between the two.
The box office results are a clear indication of success. Deadpool and Wolverine are expected to earn $360 million during its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie and the top opening weekend of 2024.
This follows a disappointing year of record low performances (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Secret Invasion, and The Marvels), indicating a strong demand for chimichangas.
In a recent interview with Variety, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were questioned about their potential involvement in upcoming Avengers projects. Reynolds responded with uncertainty, stating “I’m not sure. We’ll have to wait and see.”
During an interview with Collider, Kevin Feige revealed that Marvel’s strategy for incorporating Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU moving forward is to simply “get through this [first].”
“There has been a lot of enthusiastic discussions about what we should do next,”he exclaimed after exclaiming, “That was fun!”
