Doctor Doom just made his MCU debut — but there’s a catch

Although Doctor Doom recently appeared in one of Marvel’s latest projects, this does not officially mark his introduction into the MCU.

Doctor Doom is a well-known character, having debuted in the world of superhero movies in 2005 with the live-action Fantastic Four.

Despite appearing in the ill-fated sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, and the even more ill-fated 2015 reboot, this character has yet to make an official appearance in the MCU since its launch with Iron Man in 2008. Fans have been eagerly anticipating his arrival.

Although it was only a brief appearance, Doom has officially entered Marvel’s new era in a sense through his cameo in Episode 8 of X-Men ’97. This inclusion in the Disney+/Marvel superhero TV show could be interpreted as Doom’s official entry into the MCU as we know it. However, it should be noted that X-Men ’97 is not considered canon.

Despite this, it is possible that this is just a glimpse of what is to come. Doctor Doom has been closely observed in the past year and there is a possibility for him to have a larger role in the overall narrative of the MCU, especially with Marvel’s potential restructuring after the dismissal of Jonathan Majors.

Despite already being established as the main antagonist for the upcoming Kang arc, Majors was removed from Marvel’s slate in 2023 after being convicted of assault.

There is speculation that Doctor Doom will be chosen as Kang’s replacement should Marvel choose to take a different direction. Known as one of the iconic villains in the Marvel universe, Doom is also set to make an appearance in the upcoming Fantastic Four film.

Despite being a long-standing nemesis of Reed Richards, Doom is expected to have a significant role in the film. However, the main antagonist is rumored to be Galactus.
