Doctor Who fans are divided over Episode 2’s wild ending

The dramatic finale of Doctor Who Season 14 Episode 2 has caused a division among fans, with some feeling it was excessive while others thought it was just right.

In the second installment of the new season, titled ‘The Devil’s Chord’, the Doctor and Ruby Sunday embark on a journey to London in 1965. Their destination is Abbey Road Studios, then known as EMI Recording Studios, where they aim to witness The Beatles recording their debut album.

Despite their efforts, the group’s plan is thwarted when the notorious Doctor Who antagonist, Maestro, pilfers music from the world, resulting in artists like The Beatles and Cilla Black losing all creative inspiration. However, the most buzzed-about aspect of the Doctor Who episode is its conclusion, featuring a grand musical performance accompanied by a troupe of background dancers.

The number is designated to the song ‘There’s Always a Twist at the End’, most likely in reference to the enigmatic Susan Twist. Yet, the elaborate spectacle has resulted in a division among fans, as some passionately adore the concluding sequence.

One fan on X expressed their opinion that every Doctor Who episode should conclude with a musical number. This sentiment was echoed by others, who also commented that the musical ending of “Devils Chord”added a fun and unique touch to the episode. They believed that it was important for Doctor Who to embrace diversity and lightheartedness at times.

One individual expressed, “How can there be an episode discussing the significance of music and its impact on the soul without including a musical performance?”

Additionally, there were those who remained unconvinced. They strongly disliked the musical number and contended that it detracted from an otherwise enjoyable episode.

According to a tweet from a user of X, their sentiment was: “What in the world was going on in the last five minutes??? I enjoy musicals, but not in the middle of Doctor Who.”

According to one comment on Reddit, the episode was generally well-received, but they felt that the sudden musical number at the end took away from the atmosphere and tension that had been carefully crafted. They added that the episode would have received a perfect score if the musical number had been omitted. Another individual on Twitter shared a similar sentiment, stating that without the musical number, they would have given the episode a perfect 10/10 rating.

“According to a Reddit user, the musical number was foolish. They were fine with the Christmas episode as it was meant to be playful and fanciful, but the ending felt too juvenile and reminiscent of a Nickelodeon show.”

According to showrunner Russell T Davies, the musical number also offers a glimpse into a parallel universe. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Davies revealed that a Doctor Who musical was once a possibility. In fact, the idea even caught the attention of ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who famously brought the hit musical Mamma Mia! to the stage.
